Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (5-11-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (6f, 8f). On the turf course, a 5-2 stalker graduated in the flat mile opener, a 3-1 closer scored at 6f, a dueling front running favorite tallied at 6f, a 5-1 closer won at a mile and an eighth, and even money favorite rallied to win the Santa Barbara at 1 1/2 miles (rail at 20 feet).

Antonio Fresu (dirt) and Umberto Rispoli (turf) both booted home a pair.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 5-11-24

Santa Barbara Stakes (12T)

Fractions: 23.25, 47, 1;12.25, 1:37.47, 2:02.56, 2:26.77

Top 4 Finishers: Musical Rhapsody (IRE), Duvet Day (IRE), Vincero Grande, Comanche Country (IRE)

Comments: This was a real battle between the two favorites. Duvet Day was my top choice and she was always in a good spot behind two speed horses. She moved up in the stretch and struck the front, and even money favorite Musical Rhapsody came after her and the race was on. The latter gained the advantage and Duvet Day dug in and fought back, and it was too close to call at the wire. The photo finish went to Musical Rhapsody by a nose and that cost me a $10 copy of the Golden Hour Double.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $135,116 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $3,608.80. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $59.70.

May 11 Claims: Race 4 – Beau Soleil ($32k, Robert Hess Jr.), Satellite Heart ($32k, Steve Knapp). Race 7 – Seventeen Black ($25k, James Cassidy).

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at seven panels on dirt. On the turf course, a front runner won the 9f opener, a last-to-first closer scored at 1-2 odds at one mile, a 3-1 front runner tallied at 6f, a 5-1 stalker scored at one mile, and a closing favorite graduated in the 5f finale.

Turf hat trick for Juan Hernandez. Edwin Maldonado booted home a pair of dirt sprint winners. John Sadler saddled two winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 5-12-24

Lazaro Barrera Stakes (7f)

Fractions: 22.69, 45.02, 1:09.12, 1:21.86

Top 4 Finishers: Tapalo, Ball Don’t Lie, Tessuto, Heart Headed

Comments: This 4-horse extended sprint was settled very early. Tapalo got clear early under Hector Berrios and that was the ballgame. He stayed clear throughout and widened to win by 7 lengths. Post time favorite Ball Don’t Lie chased from second and stayed there from start to finish. He was 5 1/2 half lengths in front of Tessuto and Heart Headed. John Sadler saddled the winner for Hronis Racing, and this New York-bred son of Tapiture might ship to the Empire State to compete in a state bred stakes race in the near future.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $162,321 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $4,129.40. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $74.60.
