Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (1-21-24)

Good main track and good turf course. One front running winner at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. On the turf course, a closing favorite graduated at 1 1/8 miles, a front running favorite won the Astra Stakes at 1 1/2 miles, and a last-to-first closer won his stateside bow as the favorite at 1 1/4 miles (rail at 20 feet).

Tiago Pereira booted home a pair. Antonio Fresu and Phil D’Amato teamed up for two wins. Mark Glatt saddled two winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-21-24

Astra Stakes (1 1/2 miles turf): Linda’s Gift was not in front early while wide, but Tiago Pereira made a quick move and forged to the lead. They went 23.52 and 47.05, and slowed it down at the six furlong mark (1:13.30). The second interior fraction was 26.25 and Linda’s Gift was home free with six panels to go. She stayed clear and won by a comfortable length and a half. Musical Rhapsody (IRE) stalked from the outside post and was clearly second best, and my top choice Duvet Day (IRE) found her best stride late and grabbed the show in her first start since June 2023. Lakota Spirit, Leisurewear (IRE), Rose Barton (IRE), and Yarborough also ran. The final time was 2:28.49 and Richard Mandella saddled the winner.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $116,367, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,412.80. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $33.00.

Jan. 21 ClaimsRace 1 – Crypto Craze ($20k, Mark Glatt). Race 2 – Stay in Line ($25k, Ron Ellis). Race 5 – Paco’s Pico ($10k, Anthony Saavedra).
