Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint

This race lacked speed and Leggs Galore got out there early and kept on going in a sharp 3+ length victory under Ricky Gonzalez. The minor awards were filled by late runners with Nardini grabbing the runner-up spot over Warren’s Showtime and She’s Devoted.

Cal Cup Oaks

Nice ride by turf master Umberto Rispoli in this flat mile grass affair. He put my top choice Closing Remarks in a good stalking spot and she got the jump on Warrens Candy Girl in a one-length triumph. Super Game did all of the pace dirty work and held 3rd by a neck over Dylans Wild Cat. Sensible Cat finished 5th as the beaten favorite and did not have a great trip.

Cal Cup Derby

Strong debut sprint winner The Chosen Vron scratched, and that changed the race shape dramatically. Good With People cleared off early but the sprinter figured to run out of gas at some point, and he did. Surface switched Big Fish was patiently handled by Juan Hernandez and he had all of the stretch momentum and scored by a length and a half. None Above The Law got the first run trip under Kent D and was clearly second best, and Good With People held 3rd. Warrens Candy Man was hung out wide from an outer post before moving inside in the stretch and finishing 4th. Positivity was a neck behind him in 5th and the rest were far back.

Unusual Heat Turf Classic

Cono ran off early and that helped set the stage for my best bet top choice North County Guy. Mario Gutierrez had the eventual winner in a perfect spot in midpack, and he slowly moved up outside and held off 21-1 longshot Heck Yeah to score by a neck. Acclimate sat in second behind the runaway early leader and got to the front after that one gave up the ghost, but he ran out of steam late and held 3rd over Ward n’ Jerry and Brandothebartender.

Cal Cup Sprint

Brickyard Ride was lightning quick early and he ran them off their feet in this six panel dash. He was never seriously threatened under apprentice Alexis Centeno and scored by 3+ lengths while stopping the clock in 1:09.42. My top choice Tigre Di Slugo rallied inside to edge Fashionably Fast and Loud Mouth for the runner-up spot. Jamming Eddy got tired of chasing Brickyard Ride and weakened to 5th. The other six runners were no threat.

Astra Stakes (G3)

A decisive early move by Umberto Rispoli made all the difference in this race. There was not much pace on with longshots Aunt Lubie and Carpe Vinum showing the way. Hermaphrodite (FR) was tucked in nicely along the inside under Rosario, and Quick (GB) stalked outside. Rispoli started to quicken aboard Quick, and Hermaphrodite was bottled up along the inside at that critical moment. Quick kicked clear and Hermaphrodite was gaining once she found sufficient running room but the wire arrived and the former held on by a nose. The runner-up was probably best. Altea (FR) rallied from last to finish best of the rest in 3rd. The others were of no consequence.

Megahertz Stakes (G3)

Only four horses competed here after a pair of late scratches. Brooke (CHI) set the pace from the rail and Mucho Unusual pressed that one, forged to the front in the stretch, and edged clear to win by 3/4ths of a length under Joel Rosario. She was supposed to win this and did what she had to do. Sedamar rallied down the middle and got past Brooke to earn the runner-up spot. The latter was 3rd but bothered Colonial Creed and was demoted to last place.
