Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for Friday (2-5-21)

Baffle Stakes (6.5T, rail at 30 feet)

Earls Rock (IRE) was the strong favorite in this race and the players definitely got this one right. Flavien Prat handled the winner patiently, and he rallied inside and outkicked my value top choice Beer Can Man to win by a bit less than a length. Mac Daddy Too was all over the pace and was best of the rest in 3rd, and 95-1 outsider Harlans Estate completed the superfecta. Sword Zorro (IRE), Commander Khai, Weston, Gator Shining, and Exhalting also ran.

Rainbow 6 Jackpot Carryover for Saturday (2-6-21): $898,063.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for Saturday (2-6-21)

Las Virgenes (G3)

In this one mile race for sophomore fillies, Moonlight d’Oro pretty much ended up dominating. Kalypso controlled the pace and Flavien Prat was content to sit back in last of five aboard Moonlight d’Oro. The latter cruised up while racing wide and just ran past Kalypso at the top of the lane. She remained clear in the stretch and scored by a comfortable length and a half. Kalypso never stopped trying but was second best on this day. Moraz stalked inside and was best of the rest in 3rd. Brilliant Cut and Honor America trailed. Moonlight d’Oro was diagnosed with bone chips a few days after her Las Virgenes victory. The injury will require surgery and she is off the Kentucky Oaks trail.

San Marcos (G2)

This was not a strong renewal of this ten furlong grass race. Acclimate controlled the pace and Masteroffoxhounds was in chase mode, and those two dominated throughout. The latter was always moving the better of the two and edged clear late to win by a length and a quarter. Acclimate was a clear 2nd and 19-1 outsider Starting Over edged Salvator Mundi for the show. Veteran turf campaigners Cleopatra’s Strike and Oscar Dominguez trailed.

San Vicente (G2)

Only five broke from the gate but there was plenty of quality in this compact extended sprint. Freedom Fighter got a flyer from the rail post and was quickly clear. The Chosen Vron and Concert Tour chased, and it was rapidly turning into a match race between Baffert stablemates Freedom Fighter and Concert Tour. Neither would give an inch and were on even terms for much of the stretch. Concert Tour finally wrestled a short lead late and scored by a 1/2 length. Freedom Fighter ran a winning race but settled for the place, and The Chosen Vron was 6+ lengths clear of Found My Ball and Uncle Boogie.

Thunder Road (G3)

This flat mile turf race was captured by comebacker Hit The Road. Sombeyay tried to steal off from the inside post but tepid favorite Bob and Jackie kept close tabs from 2nd. Hit The Road was in the garden spot behind those two, and he loomed up and took off in the lane to score by a bit less than four lengths. Bob and Jackie always tries hard and this race was no exception. He fought back to secure the runner-up spot, and Border Town saved ground from off the pace and nipped Sombeyay for 3rd. Hembree was next and Campaign never got involved and was well behind the others.
