Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for Saturday (3-6-21)
China Doll Stakes
Sweetest Angel and Blue Ballon carved out honest splits and even money favorite Going Global (IRE) sat patiently in 4th, swung out, and outfinished Closing Remarks to score by a bit less than a length. My top choice Quattroelle (GB) was last for much of the running and showed nice late interest to land the show. Sweetest Angel, Golden, and Blue Ballon trailed.
San Felipe Stakes (G2)
Life Is Good dominated throughout from the inside post. Mike Smith was aboard the winner and he was well clear from start to finish. He drifted out through the lane but it did not matter today. He crossed the line at least eight lengths in front of his stablemate Medina Spirit. Dream Shake stalked inside and was best of the rest in 3rd. Roman Centurian was up for 4th and The Great One stalked outside and weakened to 5th. None Above The Law was next and Govenor’s Party could not keep up and eased across the line. Life Is Good was impressive again and he remains a very promising Derby prospect. His raw speed is impressive and he is still learning to harness his available energy.
San Carlos (G2)
Brickyard Ride was well clear from start to finish. Nobody could keep up with his ample early foot, and he spurted clear after a half-mile and won by four lengths. My best bet top choice Tigre Di Slugo chased from the outside post and edged Exaulted for the place. Major Cabbie made a move in the stretch but flattened out to 4th, and he was followed by Storm the Court, Manhattan Up, Strongconstitution, Extra Hope, and Loud Mouth.
Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1)
In a thrilling renewal of this flat mile turf affair, fellow stalkers Hit the Road and Smooth Like Strait put on a show. The latter broke from the rail and hit the front first, but Hit the Road was just behind that one throughout and they hooked up in the lane. Hit the Road stuck his neck out late and just edged Smooth Like Strait, and Count Again flew from the back of the pack to finish a neck behind those two. Flavius was right there throughout and ended up 4th. Royal Ship (BRZ), Casa Creed, Ride a Comet, Spirit Animal, Flying Scotsman, and Social Paranoia also ran.
Santa Anita Handicap (G1)
King Guillermo and Tizamagician were the early leaders but did not have the class or stamina to keep up. Express Train stalked those two and got first run. He looked home free but my value top choice Idol, patiently handled while racing wide under Joel Rosario, was bearing down in the lane and got up by a half-length. Express Train ran a winning race but had to settle for the place, and beaten favorite Maxfield outfinished Independence Hall for the show. Tizamagician, Kiss Today Goodbye, Coastal Defense, and King Guillermo completed the order of finish.

Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3)
This was only a field of four but it turned out to be quite the race. Kalypso set the pace as expected but she had distance limitations and did not factor into the final outcome. My top pick Moraz got a perfect trip. She intently tracked Kalypso from the outside post, and crept up, inched away, and looked home free. Beautiful Gift stalked from 3rd place and started getting closer in the stretch. At this point, jockey Umberto Rispoli aboard Moraz could feel footsteps and started peeking back. He saw Beautiful Gift closing on his outside and tried to push his mount to the wire but it was too late. Beautiful Gift had the momentum and surged late to score by a head. Moraz let this one get away. She will never get a better trip in a graded race with a short field. John Velazquez never gave up on Beautiful Gift and was rewarded with a victory aboard the Baffert trainee. Actually, Baffert saddled all of the runners in this field with the exception of Moraz (Michael McCarthy). His other runner Heels Up trailed throughout, eased in the stretch, and walked off.
