Santa Anita Graded Stakes Recaps for Saturday (4-3-21)

Providencia Stakes (G3)

Going Global was the strong favorite and she did not disappoint her backers. The chalk stalked, ranged up, took over, and held off inside stalker Closing Remarks to win by a neck. Sensible Cat set the pace from the inside and held off Ivy League and Quattroelle for the show. Royal Address and Derby Quest trailed.

Santa Anita Oaks (G2)

Flavien Prat made a bold early inside move aboard Soothsay and that was the difference maker. Moraz set the pace from the rail and Beautiful Gift tracked outside. Soothsay was 3rd after a half-mile and Javanica trailed the compact field. Moraz continued to lead but there was room to her inside and Prat took full advantage. It was a 3-horse battle turning for home and Moraz was the first to retreat. It came down to Soothsay and Beautiful Gift and the former stubbornly held on by a half-length. Beautiful Gift had every chance but could not get by the winner in a clear runner-up finish. Moraz was well clear of Javanica.

Santa Anita Derby (G1)

Rock Your World did not miss a beat on the surface switch. He went straight to the front under Umberto Rispoli, and he was always traveling sweetly. He was pressured for a half-mile and steadily increased his advantage after pace presser Parnelli got tired. He was up a length and a half after six furlongs, kicked clear by 2+ lengths in the stretch, and cruised across the line more than four lengths ahead of beaten favorite Medina Spirit. The latter always shows up for Baffert and he pulled away from Dream Shake in a clear runner-up finish. My value top choice Dream Shake sat the ground saving stalking trip I expected and was best of the rest in 3rd. He is talented but has distanced limitations. The other Baffert trainee Defunded rallied to finish well clear of the rest in 4th, and Law Professor followed him home. Parnelli, The Great One, and Back Ring Home were next, and Ottothelegend eased in the stretch and walked off.

Royal Heroine Stakes (G2)

Flavien Prat is in the zone and he took no prisoners in this spot. Charmaine’s Mia was his mount and she was the favorite but not the only one with early foot. No problem. Prat just got aggressive early and put her on the lead. Game over. She ran the other speed horses into the ground and held off Dogtag to score by a half-length. The latter was my value top choice and she did not have the smoothest journey. She was content to race in midpack from the inside post under Rispoli. She checked and steadied, waited for room, and moved out and came after the winner in the stretch while settling for the place in a bang-up effort off the bench for Richard Mandella. Warren’s Showtime rallied to finish a clear 3rd and Tapwater completed the superfecta. Laura’s Light, Raymundos Secret, Rideforthecause, and Ippodamia’s Girl also ran.

Rainbow 6 Jackpot Carryover for Sunday (4-4-21): $0. There was a mandatory payout on SA Derby Day and multiple winning tickets paid $741.44 each. I ended up with 5 out of 6. I went five deep in the 11th race but did not have 11-1 wire job winner Quiet Secretary.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for Sunday (4-4-21)

Las Flores (G3)

Gamine was a complete standout vs. just three rivals in her first start as a 4yo. She went right to the front from the inside post and the final outcome was never in doubt. She coasted home by 5+ lengths in a perfect tuneup for the Derby City Distaff (G1) under the Twin Spires on May 1. Baffert’s other entrant Qahira outran Biddy Duke for the runner-up spot, and Hang a Star was the distant trailer.
