Del Mar Recap for Friday (7-23-21)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (5f, 6f, 7f). The turf course winners were a last-to-first closer at 8T, a front runner at 5T, and a stalker at one mile on turf (rail at 12 feet).

With multiple ship and win horses competing at Del Mar, I am keeping track of where the winners are coming from. On Friday, five winners last started at SA, two winners exited a race at LRC, and the lone out of town ship and win success story invaded from CD.

Riding doubles for Kent Desormeaux and Flavien Prat.

Fleet Treat Stakes Recap – Winner: I’m So Anna ($13.40)

Outside speed dominated this extended sprint stakes affair, and that happens frequently in longer races around one-turn. I’m So Anna and Teddy’ds Barino hooked up from the get-go and neither gave an inch. I’m So Anna was able to edge clear late to score by a length. Teddy’s Barino held 2nd by a half-length over Closing Remarks and Fi Fi Pharoah was along for 4th. Eddie’s New Dream, Respectfully, Wishtheyallcouldbe, and Joymaker trailed. The final time was 1:24.34.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $206,802, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $7,891.56. The jackpot carryover stands at $125,021.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (7-24-21)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (6.5f, 5.5f, 6f). The lone dirt route at 8f was captured by midpack stalker Salah. The turf course winners were a presser at 8T, a closer at 8T, a flat mile stalker elevated to first through disqualification, a stalker at 9T, and a closer at 8T (rail at 12 feet).

With multiple ship and win horses competing at Del Mar, I am keeping track of where the winners are coming from. On Saturday, eight winners last started at SA, one winner exited LRC, one was a 2yo filly FTS for Mark Glatt. Clem Labine was the other winner, and he exited a runner-up finish at Pleasanton in NoCal.

Riding double for leading pilot Flavien Prat, and he picked up another stakes win aboard United in the Eddie Read (G2). Simon Callaghan saddled two sharp winners. His promising sophomore filly Sea Dreamer ran off the screen in her dirt sprint maiden win in the 3rd, and Madone rallied to defeat heavy favorite Going Global in the San Clemente (G2).

Eddie Read Stakes (G2) Recap – Winner: United ($8.60)

United bounced back nicely in this spot after throwing in a rare below par effort in the Whittingham (G2) last time. Award Winner set the pace and pressed from 2nd, took a short lead, and United ran him down. Prat rode the winner and he put him in a good stalking spot, and he just had a bit more stamina than the beaten favorite. Count Again did his thing in a rallying show finish, and was followed by Vintage Print, Award Winner, Restrainedvengence, and Say The Word.

San Clemente Stakes (G2) Recap – Winner: Madone ($13.60)

The pace was fast in this flat mile turf stakes and heavy favorite Going Global (IRE) was patiently handled under Prat. He rallied in the lane and briefly led, but Juan Hernandez gave Madone a great closing ride and made the last run to upset the favorite by a half-length. Tetragonal (IRE) stalked and held off my value top choice Karakatsie for show honors. The latter, a Florida shipper, dod not have the smoothest journey under Kent D and actually ran a decent race from an outer post.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $440,437, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $7,590.76. The jackpot carryover stands at $225,863. There is also a Super High 5 carryover of $18,040 heading into the Sunday finale.

July 24 Claims: Race 2 – Awhitesportscoat ($12.5k, Steve Knapp), Prince Ricky ($12.5k, Sergio Morfin), Satchel de Ritches ($12.5k, Peter Miller). Race 5 – Bold Voyager ($20k, Steve Knapp), Heir-FR ($20k, Vann Belvoir). Race 11 – Big Passion ($14k, Charles Strutts), Traffic Stopper ($16k, Andreas Psarras).

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (7-25-21)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (6.5f, 5.5f, 6.5f). No dirt routes on the card. The turf course winners were a front runner from the outside post at 5T, a last-to-first closer at 8T, a stalker at 5T, and a last-to-first closer at 8.5T (rail at 12 feet).

With multiple ship and win horses competing at Del Mar, I am keeping track of where the winners are coming from. On Sunday, there were no winners from out of state. Six winners last started at SA, two exited LRC, and one last raced at DMR last summer. The other winner was Baffert FTS Murray.

Riding triples for Abel Cedillo and leading pilot Flavien Prat. A pair of wins for Umberto Rispoli. On the trainer front, Bob Baffert saddled the early double including romping debut juvenile winner Murray. The latter is most likely targeting the Del Mar Futurity (G1) Sept. 6.

Daisycutter Handicap Recap – Winner: Superstition ($6.00)

There was just too much early pace for a front runner to endure, and the public got this one right on the win end. Post time favorite Superstition sat the right tactical trip behind rapid splits, and she got first run and comfortably scored by a length and a half under Flavien Prat. My value top choice Querelle rallied from the back and just earned the place over front running returnee Bulletproof One and closer Gypsy Spirit (GB). Constantia got going too late at this abbreviated 5T trip and was followed by Bruja Escarlata, Never For Money, Five Pics Please, Rakassah (IRE), and Lenzi’s Lucky Lady.

California Dreamin’ Recap – Winner: Brandothebartender ($11.40)

Brandothebartender just keep on going. The 8yo CA-bred gelding went last-to-first under Umberto Rispoli, and this was his third stakes victory of 2021. My value top choice Indian Peak closed too, and he actually struck the front after making a middle move under Prat, but Brandothebartender gradually wore him down and scored by a half-length. North County Guy did not have the smoothest trip from the outside post and just did grab 3rd over pace prompter Wound Tight. The rest of the entrants did not seriously threaten.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $446,461, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $6,276.54. The jackpot carryover stands at $328,081.

July 25 Claims: Race 4 – Alexandros ($32k, Richard Baltas), Bibleman ($32k, Bob Hess Jr.), Buttered Noodles ($32k, Manuel Ortiz Sr.), Colosi ($32k, Peter Miller), Littlebitamedal ($32k, Doug O’Neill). Race 10 – B’esame Me Mucho ($20k, Tim Yakteen).

Double (races 2-3, $25.00)

Pick 3 (races 2-4, $140.00)
DMR 7 Superstition/Querelle Quinella ($24.20), Trifecta ($166.40)

*Full card highlights based on $2 wagers unless otherwise noted.
