Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (1-15-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at seven panels on dirt. On the turf course, a stalker won the 8f opener, an outside presser tallied at 6f, closer Aligato rumbled home in the Unusual Heat Turf Classic at 9f, front runner Leggs Galore sailed home in the Sunshine Millions F&M Turf Sprint at 6.5f, and Rose Dawson flew home from off the pace in the Cal Cup Oaks at 8f.

Hat trick for Flavien Prat. Riding double for Juan Hernandez. On the trainer side, Phil D’Amato and Doug O’Neill both saddled two winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-15-22

Cal Cup Derby – Highland Ghost and Straight Up G set solid splits, and Fast Draw Munnings ($10.40) bided his time under Van Dyke and wore down the speed to score by a neck. Straight Up G did all of the pace dirty work and was clearly second best. Finneus had every chance but could not go with the top two late. He was miles clear of Agador Spartacus and Sippin N Kissin. Highland Ghost eased. The winning time for 8.5f on dirt was 1:46.99.

Unusual Heat Turf Classic – Aligato ($8.40) stretched out and finished full of run for Prat/Glatt. He rolled on by to score by a bit less than two lengths. Camino Del Paraiso stalked inside, raced in traffic, and found room in the lane and just got up for the place. Ferrariano battled on the pace and was a clear 3rd. Luvluv was up for 4th and was followed by Big Fish, Indian Peak, and fading pacesetter Whooping Jay. The winner stopped the clock in 1:48.29 in this nine panel turf affair.

Sunshine Millions F&M Turf Sprint – This one was over early. Leggs Galore ($7.20) got to the front from post 11 and was never seriously threatened in a 2-1/4 length victory for Ricky Gonzalez and Phil D’Amato. Alice Marble stalked from the rail under Prat and gave D’Amato the exacta. Eddie’s New Dream stalked and just edged late runner Warren’s Showtime for 3rd. They traveled 6.5f down the hill in 1:12.99.

Cal Cup Sprint – Brickyard Ride ($5.40) was too fleet for his rivals and repeated his 2021 victory in this race. He was fast early, opened up, and stayed clear to score by a bit less than two lengths. My value top choice Positivity stumbled at the start, stalked inside, and was second best. Letsgetlucky chased from 2nd and held 3rd. They completed 6f in 1:09.54.

Cal Cup Oaks – In this flat mile turf event for sophomore fillies, Rose Dawson ($11.40) stormed home from the back of the pack to score by a length for Prat/D’Amato. Big Novel stalked from the inside post and completed the exacta. My top choice Vivacious Vanessa stalked outside and gave it a look in the lane, but was a bit flat late in a clear show finish. The final time was 1:36.07.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $3,889.40, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $2,633,24. I had the first five and needed Vivacious Vanessa in the finale, but she ended up 3rd. There was a mandatory payout in the Pick 6 on Cal Cup Saturday, and the jackpot starts over on Sunday.

Jan. 15 Claims: Race 2 – Cause She’s a Lady ($50k, Doug O’Neill). Race 7 – Rookie Mistake ($20k, Mark Glatt), Scary Fast Smile ($20k, Doug O’Neill).
