Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 2-19-22

Pasadena: Sumter ($5.20) seized control of this race early under Flavien Prat. Barsabas pressed her for six panels but the eventual winner kicked away in the stretch and held safe to win by a bit less than a length. Handy Dandy did not have the smoothest trip from post 10 and closed nicely for the place. Crosby Beach rallied to finish a troubled 3rd and Don’t Swear Dave also found some trouble and completed the superfecta.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $219,211, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $97.98. The jackpot carryover stands at $664,317. There is a mandatory payout on Sunday.

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at seven panels on dirt. On the turf course, a front runner won the flat mile opener, a stalker from post 10 graduated at 6.5f, another front runner tallied at 8f, and a last-to-first closer won the hillside stakes, and a front runner ended the card with a win at 6f (rail at 10 feet).

Juan Hernandez booted home the early double. Tim Yakteen saddled a pair of maiden sprint winners (6f, 6.5T).

San Simeon (G3): Bombard set the pace as expected. My top choice Beer Can Man (3-2 favorite) chased from 2nd but Bran (FR) pressed outside and kept that one hemmed in. Barraza ($5.60) was the 1.80 second choice in the wagering, and he sat back in last under his substitute rider Daisuke Fukumoto. He made a wide rally and was forced very wide on the dirt crossing, and he powerfully pulled clear to win by a much the best 2-3/4 lengths. Indian Peak rallied from the outside post to finish 2nd at 20-1, and Beer Can Man nipped Bombard for the show. The running time was 1:12.66.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $5,044.80, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $6,033.62. There was a mandatory payout on Sunday so the jackpot starts over on Monday.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 2-21-22

Spring Fever: Becca Taylor ($2.40) pressed Omg Jessica from the outside post, and after dueling turning for home, she gradually pulled clear to score by a length and a quarter. Omg Jessica tried hard throughout and was clearly second best. Super Game was no match for the top pair but finished clear of the other two entrants. The final time was 1:10.86.

Tiznow: Brickyard Ride ($3.20) stretched his speed to one mile and won for fun. He cleared off early just like he did in almost all of his sprint starts, and he widened throughout and coasted to an easy 7-1/2 length triumph. My top choice Touchdown Brown rallied to finish a clear 2nd and Wilder Than Most was best of the rest in 3rd. The final time was 1:37.77.
