Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (4-2-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners at one mile on dirt. On the turf course, the front running favorite romped in the 8f opener, front running chalk Sumter just held on in the Singletary at one mile, another chalk won at 8f, this time stalking the pace, a front running favorite easily tallied down the hill, and a closing longshot overcame a rough start to win the 6f finale.

Hat trick for Mike Smith. Riding double for Tyler Baze. On the trainer side, Doug O’Neill saddled three winners including two on turf.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 4-2-22

Singletary: Very tight finish here. Sumter ($3.20) had to go fast to clear off early (22.88). He stayed clear for quite some time under Mike Smith but things got very interesting late. Overseas shipper Balnikhov (IRE) broke slow, stalked inside, came after the longtime leader, and just missed by a bob. It looked like he was in front right before and after the wire, but the chalk got his nose down when in counted. My top choice Handy Dandy rallied out in the middle and was the third head on the line in a good effort. Durante and Almanera (IRE) chased and weakened. The final time for 8T was 1:34.65.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $127,381, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $2,362.38. The jackpot carryover stands at $178,079.

April 2 Claims: Race 2 – Claim of Passion ($16k, Steve Miyadi), Mongolian Legend ($16k, Jerry Wallace II), Tembo ($16k, Steve Miyadi). Race 9 – Equilove ($50k, Steve Knapp).
