Del Mar Recap for Saturday (9-3-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (8f, 6.5f). The other four dirt winners were close up throughout from outer lanes. On the turf course, a midpack stalker scored as the favorite at 8.5f, a midpack stalker graduated as the favorite at 8f, a closing favorite tallied in the Del Mar Mile (G2), a 6-1 front runner stole the 9f Del Mar Derby (G2), and a closing favorite won the Del Mar Handicap (G2) at 11f.

Four-bagger for Flavien Prat included three graded wins. John Velazquez booted home a pair of juvenile first timers in dirt sprints. Phil D’Amato saddled two graded turf route winners (Hong Kong Harry, Gold Phoenix), and Prat rode both.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 9-3-22

Shared Belief (8f): This was a match race but not the one we were expecting. Go Joe Won ($44.80) got the early lead from the inside post and race favorite High Connection chased. Those two had it all to themselves throughout and after a long battle it was the longshot by a nose. The top two were 10+ clear of show finisher Newgrange. Il Bellator was next and Armagnac never got involved from the outside post. The final time for 8f on dirt was 1:37.69.

Del Mar Mile (G2): Air Force Red and Goliad hooked up early and pulled well clear. Hong Kong Harry ($4.40) bided his time in midpack under Prat, and got forced out in the stretch but had all the momentum and won comfortably by 2+ lengths over inside stalker Irideo. Cathkin Peak rallied from last to edge Air Force Red for the show. Tarantino, None Above the Law, Goliad, Astronaut, and Figureti also competed. The final time for 8T was 1:33.15.

Del Mar Derby (G2): Nobody wanted the early lead and they just let Slow Down Andy ($15.40) gallop along uncontested out front, and he never slowed down in a half-length victory over 68-1 outsider Spycatcher. War At Seas stalked and held the show by a neck over Balnikov. The latter was last for much of the running before swinging in action too late in a race that did not set up for him. Cabo Spirit, Mackinnon, Dandy Warhol, St Anthony, and Barsabas completed the order of finish. The final time for 9T was 1:48.27.

Pacific Classic (G1): There are no words to describe Flightline ($2.60). I’ll keep it short and sweet. He was just cantering throughout while the others were hard pressed to keep up. He tracked Extra Hope early, took over without being asked, and poured it on in a devastating 19+ length victory for Flavien Prat and John Sadler. He is in another league and has been untouchable sprinting and routing. Dubai World Cup (G1) hero Country Grammer was clearly second best and Royal Ship finished a half-length in front of Express Train for show honors. Extra Hope was next and Stilleto Boy trailed. The final time was a very snappy 1:59.28. After this performance, some horses will probably opt for the Dirt Mile over the Classic.

Del Mar Handicap (G2): The pace was relatively soft but local turf routes have mostly been favoring late runners all meet long. Gold Phoenix ($9.60) was patiently handled by Flavien Prat, and he swung out in the stretch and nailed post time favorite Master Piece in the last jump to win by a head. Dicey Mo Chara rallied inside to land the show and Tizamagician and Masteroffoxhounds rounded out the Super High 5. Gregdar, Tango Tango Tango, Heywoods Beach, Red King, Tesoro, and Order and Law also ran. The final time for 11T was 2:14.51.

September 3 Claims: Race 1 – Disko Tribute ($16k, Reid France), Draw the Foul ($16k, O. J. Juaregui).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $1,957,026, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,801.80. There was a mandatory payout on Pacific Classic Day and the jackpot pool starts over on Sunday.

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (9-4-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners at one mile on dirt. Tactical types were best in the other dirt races. On the turf course, an outside pace prompter won at 5f, a midpack stalker scored at 8f, inside stalking favorite Lieutenant Dan won the Green Flash ‘Cap (G3) at 5f, and a 12-1 stalker won the flat mile finale.

Ramon Vazquez and Bob Baffert teamed up for two wins. Mike Smith guided home two winners on the main track. Doug O’Neill saddled two dirt winners and George Papaprodromou saddled two turf route winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 9-4-22

Torrey Pines (G3): The race shape changed dramatically after Under the Stars blew the break. Her stablemate Midnight Memories ($13.00) found herself all alone out front and post time favorite Desert Dawn was forced to chase from the inside post. Those two had the race to themselves and Midnight Memories gamely turned away the favorite to score by 3/4s of a length. Desert Dawn was clearly second best and Grace Adler was miles clear of the rest in 3rd. Cinnamon Cat, an unlucky Under the Stars, and Malibu Marie also ran. The final time for one mile on dirt was 1:36.32.

Green Flash Handicap (G3): In this Win & You’re In for the BC Turf Sprint, Lieutenant Dan ($3.80) did not disappoint as the strong favorite. In his first start since a runner-up finish in the 2021 BC Turf Sprint, he stalked inside under leading rider Juan Hernandez. He waited patiently for running room, found it, and kicked away to win by a length and a quarter. Lane Way rallied for the place and closer Coulthard was another head back in 3rd. Dubai Key set the pace from the inside post and weakened to 4th. Whatmakessammyrun (5th place) did not have the smoothest trip, and was followed by Chasin Munny, Super Ocho, Barristan the Bold, Nero, and Maven. The final time for 5T was 55.87.

September 4 Claims: Race 5 – A New Peace ($25k Mark Rheinford), Blushing ($25k, Craig Lewis), Dancing Crane ($25k, Victor Trujillo), Invincibella ($25k, Steve Knapp). Storming Lady ($25k, Peter Miller). Race 6 – Economical ($16k, Jeff Metz), Rocky Gibraltar ($16k, Steve Knapp), Stayin’ Out Late ($16k, Adan Farias). Race 10 – Taming the Tigress ($40k, Brian Koriner).

Del Mar Recap for Monday (9-5-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (6f, 8f). On the turf course, a front running favorite graduated at 5f, a closing favorite tallied at 8f, a closing favorite powered away at 8.5f, and a midpack stalking favorite won the 8.5f finale (rail at 18 feet).

Four more wins for leading pilot Juan Hernandez. Two turf wins for trainer Andy Mathis.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 9-5-22

Tranquility Lake (8f): The two favorites dominated this one. Samurai Charm set a fast pace and Teddy’s Barino stalked and engaged the early leader at the six furlong mark. Those two battled the length of the stretch and Teddy’s Barino ($6.00) prevailed by a head under Mike Smith. Samurai Charm finished 10+ clear of show finisher Velvet Slippers. Ever Smart, Lisette, Bye Bye Bertie, and La Castiglione also ran. The final time for one mile was 1:35.59.

Generous Portion (CA-bred, 6f): Electric Lettuce was out quickly but wilted, and stalking favorite Chismosa ($6.00) got the lead after a half-mile, spurted away, and stayed clear to the end by a bit less than two lengths. Uncontrollable rallied from last to finish well clear of the rest in 2nd. O’Neill’s maiden Fun Money just grabbed the show over Smiling Lady. Yo Yo Mama, Big Hopes, Electric Lettuce, and E Z Pharis also ran. The final clocking for 6f was 1:11.18.
