I’m Smokin Stakes (CA-bred, 6f): Giver Not a Taker ($4.60) looked best on paper but was surprisingly not the favorite. She stalked from the outside post and ran down race favorite Straighten Up to score by 2.25 lengths. The runner-up was 7+ clear of 27-1 show finisher Amigo G A. Merit Song, Hacking It Up, and Moon Ice also ran. The final time was 1:09.82.
September 9 Claims: Race 4 – Back Ring Luck ($25k, Steve Knapp), Perfect Cut ($25k Herman Wileksky), Tartini ($25k, Luis Mendez). Race 5 – Sheza Girly Girl ($20k, Jonathan Wong). Del Mar Recap for Saturday (9-10-22)
Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 5.5f). On the turf course, a 10-1 presser won at 5f (turf good), a 7-2 stalker scored at 8f, a 2-1 midpack stalker captured the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at 8f, a 10-1 closer won the John C. Mabee (G2) at 9f, and a stalking favorite grabbed the 8f finale.
Three wins apiece for Hector Berrios and Flavien Prat. Training hat trick for Phil D’Amato (turf routes). Training doubles for Eric Kruljac (dirt sprints) and Peter Miller (dirt sprints).

Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf (8T): Second betting choice Comanche Country ($6.60) was best in this one. He sat in midpack, angled out, and rallied to win by 1-1/4 lengths under Rispoli. Sell the Dream stalked and finished 2nd, and Excelia (IRE) chased the early leader and settled for the show. First timer Pride of the Nile was forced out from post 11 and ended up a respectable 4th. The final time was 1:35.97.
Del Mar Debutante (G1): The pace was contested in this extended sprint and my value top choice And Tell Me Nolies ($21.60) sat the right patient trip and nipped heavy favorite Home Cooking by a head. The latter stumbled at the start, chased, pulled clear by 3 lengths, and just missed in a clear runner-up finish. Ice Dancing was 8+ clear of the rest in 3rd. The final time for 7f was 1:23.29.
John C. Mabee (G2): Park Avenue set the pace and faded, and Burgoo Alley (IRE) chased from 2nd but could not take advantage. This one came down to the three favorites, and 10-1 third betting choice Avenue de France ($23.80) rallied, cleared off, and held off 1-2 chalk Going Global (IRE) to tally by a half-length. The post time favorite was clearly second best and Going to Vegas stalked, got stuck in traffic, and garnered the show once clear. The final time for 9T was 1:47.96.
September 10 Claims: Race 2 – Established ($20k, Tim Yakteen), Manitowish ($20k, Rene Amescua), Square Deal ($20k Robertino Diodoro), Tizhotndusty ($20k, Jonathan Wong). Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6.5f, 7f). On the turf course, a midpack stalker at 7-1 odds graduated at 8f, a 5-1 stalker broke his maiden at 8f, a 14-1 closer tallied at 5f, an 8-1 presser captured the Del Mar Juvenile Turf at 8f, and an 8-12 closer took the final race of the summer meet at 8.5f.
Hat trick for Mike Smith. Riding doubles for Juan Hernandez and Flavien Prat. Two turf route winners for trainer Jeff Mullins.

Del Mar Juvenile Turf (8T): This was a full, competitive field and Packs a Wahlop ($18.00) won easily. He pressed from 2nd under Mike Smith, and he drew away in the stretch to tally by 4-1/4 lengths over Don’tthinkjustdoit. The latter was disqualified and placed 7th. 38-1 longshot Valiancer broke from post 14 and was elevated to 2nd, and 4-1 lukewarm favorite Dandy Man Shines (IRE) was moved up to 3rd. Ah Jeez set the pace from the inside post and completed the Superfecta after being moved up from 5th. The final time was 1:35.96.
Del Mar Futurity (G1): Cave Rock ($2.80) was the overwhelming favorite and he was strong throughout for Hernandez/Baffert. He dueled early, got control and edge clear, and won by an easy 5+ lengths over his stablemate Havnameltdown. Skinner rallied from last to pick up show dough and Newgate was right behind him in 4th. The Big Wam, Mixto, Classical Cat, Agency, and Pop d’Oro also ran. The final time for 7f was 1:20.99.
