Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (10-9-22)
Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at 6f on dirt. On the turf course, a stalking favorite graduated in the 6f opener, a front running favorite graduated at 8f, a stalking favorite won the Surfer Girl (G3) at one mile, a front running favorite took the Swingtime Stakes at one mile, a stalking favorite won down the hill, and a stalker scored as the even money choice in the Zuma Beach (G3) at one mile (rail at 10 feet).
Three turf wins for Umberto Rispoli. Mike Smith booted home a pair of turf route stakes winners. Ramon Vazquez guided home a pair on the main track. Phil D’Amato saddled a pair of turf route stakes winners.
Stakes Recaps for 10-9-22
Surfer Girl (G3): Queenzy set the pace but could not hold the advantage. My top choice Sell the Dream stalked, led, and was tagged by race favorite Comanche Country ($3.60). The top two were clear of rallying show finisher Bolt’s Broad (43-1). Fast and Shiny, Queenzy, Bolts Babe, Court Snort, and Excelia (IRE) also ran. The final time for 8T was 1:35.20.
Swingtime (8T): Hamwood Flier ($3.60) was just too fleet for her rivals. She stumbled out of the gate, took the lead, opened up, and coasted home to score by 2-1/4 lengths. My top choice Counterparty Risk (IRE) just got up for 2nd over Sugar Fix, and Warrens Candy Girl was right behind those two. Javanica, Rocking Redhead, and Natural Cooler (GB) completed the order of finish. The final time was a solid 1:33.34.
Zuma Beach (G3): 44-1 longshot Castleknock was in front for quite some time but strong favorite Packs a Wahlop ($4.00) always had his measure and kicked away to score by a bit less than three lengths. Castleknock was second best and Malibu Coast stalked from the inside post and finished an okay 3rd. Gas Me Up completed the superfecta and was followed by For a Laugh (IRE), maiden Dandy Man Shines (IRE), Ah Jeez, Russells Hustle, Giver Not a Taker, Suburban Prince, and De la Luna. The winning final time for 8T was 1:34.07.
