Del Mar Recap for Saturday (11-19-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running sprint winner at 6f on dirt. On the turf course, a pressing favorite won the 8f opener, a midpack closer scooted up the rail at scored at 5f, a pressing favorite earned his diploma at 5f, a 3-1 stalker won a flat mile MSW affair, and a 7-2 inside stalker captured the 8.5f finale (rail at 18 feet).

Hector Berrios, Juan Hernandez, and Ramon Vazquez (turf routes) each booted home a pair. Steve Knapp saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 11-19-22

Desi Arnaz Stakes (7f): Justique ($5.00) is a decent late running sprinter but this was not a fast race. She basically duplicated her visually impressive local debut. She inhaled her rivals in that 5.5f MSW affair in the summer, and she broke slow in this spot, and powered past her foes in an easy 2+ length tally for Espinoza/Shirreffs. Blessed Touch was no match for the winner but she ran a quality race. The runner-up was exiting a fast maiden win. She was mixing it up early with three other runners, and she was wide throughout under Van Dyke. She put away her pace rivals, led in the lane, and was miles clear of the show. Naughty Lottie was 3rd by a length over Parody, and Huntingcoco was another neck back in 5th. Daddy Classy Dill and Smokem for You also ran. The final time was 1:23.41.

Cary Grant Stakes (7f): The Chosen Vron ($4.00) dominated this race. Big City Lights set the pace as expected, but The Chosen Vron never let that one get away. Berrios pressed from 2nd aboard the favorite, and he took over and was well clear by 3+ lengths at the end. Big City Lights just held the place over Coalinga Road, and None Above the Law trailed. The final time was a swift 1:20.66.

Nov. 19 Claims: Race 4 – Little Rachel ($20k, Librado Barocio), So It Would Seem ($20k, Peter Miller).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $172,416, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $240.60. The jackpot carryover stands at $179,386.

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (11-20-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (5.5f, 5.5f, 8f). On the turf course, a 9-1 closer upset the flat mile opener, a 5-2 stalker graduated at 8f, and two front running favorites tallied at 5f (rail at 18 feet).

Juan Hernandez and Flavien Prat (dirt sprints) both booted home a pair. Phil D’Amato (turf) and George Papapropdromou both saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 11-20-22

Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes (7f): Havnameltdown ($3.80) kept his cool for Hernandez/Baffert. He pressed after an alert beginning. He got the lead after Hard to Figure got rank, and he edged clear and stayed on to win by a length and a quarter over his stablemate Newgate. The latter was my value top choice, and he stalked outside and came after his chalky stablemate in the lane. He kept on fighting but settled for a clear runner-up finish. Practical Move was best of the rest in 3rd. Mixto was 4th and Hard to Figure trailed. The latter was hard to handle under Prat. He was rank while getting out from the inside post, and steadily retreated. The final time was 1:21.68.

Nov. 20 Claims: Race 1 – Rock the Bourbon ($32k, Vladimir Cerin). Race 2 – Devil Moon ($20k, George Papaprodromou), Frost Alert, $20k, Steve Knapp). Race 9 – Constant Conflict ($16k, Andrew Harris), Maynard ($16k, Paul Aguire).
