Del Mar Recap for Saturday (12-3-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running route winners on dirt (8.5f, 8f). On the turf course, a 7-1 midpack closer graduated in the flat mile opener, a 7-2 stalker from the inside post won at 8.5f, a stalking favorite rode the rail in the Stormy Liberal at 5f, a closing favorite rallied from midpack to take the Jimmy Durante (G3) at one mile, and an 8-1 closer captured the Hollywood Derby (G1) at 9f.

Juan Hernandez guided home a pair of stakes winners on turf. Phil D’Amato saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 12-3-22

Stormy Liberal (5T): Great ride by Juan Hernandez aboard five panel specialist Turn On the Jets ($6.60). He was able to work his way over to the inside while stalking the pace. He found just enough room in the stretch when the speed came back, and the D’Amato trainee kicked away to win by 2+ lengths as my best bet top choice. Whatmakessammyrun was just up for the place over Sumter, and Rebel Posse completed the superfecta. Coulthard (IRE), Get Back Goldie, Respect the Code, and Hot Box also ran. The final time was 55.75.

Grade 3 Jimmy Durante (8T): Another all-star turf ride from Flavien Prat. He rode Chad Brown favorite Liguria ($4.80) in this spot. She broke from post 11 and was able to get over and avoid the overland trip. She was manageably wide from midpack, and her stretch kick was too much for the others. She scored by a comfortable 2-1/4 lengths as my best bet top over overseas shipper Decorated My Life (IRE), Sell the Dream, and Ami Please. The 12-horse field also contained Ragtime Rose, Thebestisyettobe (IRE), Pallotta Sisters, Showgirl Lynne B, Quickly Park It, Bizzy Gal, Jordan, and Lollipop Gumdrop. The final time was 1:36.18.

Grade 1 Hollywood Derby (9T): Juan Hernandez picked up his second turf stakes win of the day in the finale. Speaking Scout ($18.40) was his mount, and he rallied from an outer post to score the upset over 33-1 maiden Spycatcher and post time favorite Wit. Handy Dandy was an even 4th and Cabo Spirit rounded out the Super High 5. St Anthony, Evan Harlan, Script, Clutch Hitter, and a disappointing last. The latter broke slow, got bumped around early, and raced wide while never picking up her feet. Graham Motion saddled the winner and the final time was 1:49.34.

Dec. 3 Claims: Race 2 – Pittsburgh ($20k, Peter Miller). Race 3 – Thrumps Dream ($80k, John Sadler).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $313,380, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,598.82. The jackpot carryover stands at $513,150, and there is a Mandatory Payout on Sunday.

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (12-4-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6.5f, 6f). On the turf course, a 7-1 midpack closer graduated at first asking at 8f, a midpack stalker earned his diploma as the favorite at 8f, an outside pressing favorite won the Cecil B. DeMille (G3) at 8f, heavy favorite Regal Glory sat in 4th and overhauled the runaway front runner to repeat in the Matriarch (G1) at 8f, and a 5-2 stalker prevailed over the closing favorite in the 8.5f finale.

Flavien Prat won six races on closing day and captured the riding title. He took all five turf routes on the card including both graded stakes. Leading trainer Phil D’Amato saddled two turf route winners and Prat rode both.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 12-4-22

Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille (8T): This was a two-horse affair from the outset. Game Time gained a short advantage over Speed Boat Beach, and those two arrived at the six furlong marker as a team. Speed Boat Beach ($5.40) attacked under Prat and had outside position and momentum, but Game Time would not go away under Rispoli. In the end, Speed Boat Beach would not let Game Time reassert herself, and the Baffert trainee prevailed by half-length. Game Time was ultra game in a clear runner-up finish, and First Peace was best of the rest in 3rd. Ah Jeez finished an even 4th and is clearly better sprinting, and she was followed by Ransomware, Ze’bul, Fleet Feet, and Kolomio. The final time was 1:35.38.

Grade 1 Matriarch (8T): Hamwood Flier (IRE) ran off to a large early advantage like she usually does, but she was facing much better rivals this time. Regal Glory ($3.20) was patiently handled while sitting chilly in midpack under turf wizard Flavien Prat. She came after the loss leader and rolled on by with ease to score by 5+ lengths in her career finale. She was an excellent turf performer for quite some time and wrapped up her career in style. England’s Rose rallied from last to just grab the runner-up spot over Pizza Bianca, and Hamwood Flier was right behind those two. Avenue de France (FR), Dolce Zel (FG), Blankenship (GB), and Eddie’s New Dream also ran. The final time was 1:33.60.

The closing day 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $3,577,229, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,002.92.
