Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 2-4-23
Robert Lewis Stakes (G3): This all-Baffert Derby prep featured a quartet of stablemates. Arabian Lion set the pace from the rail and longshot Hard to Figure chased from 2nd. Maiden Worcester stalked from 3rd and even money favorite Newgate trailed. Arabian Lion was the first to crack, and Hard to Figure struck the front, but Newgate ($4.00) rallied outside under Frankie Dettori and got the job done by a neck. Hard to Figure was a clear 2nd and Worcester was well clear of a fading Arabian Lion. The final time was 1:43.11 and it was hard to learn much about this compact group. Once thing is certain. Arabian Lion is a sprinter.
Megahertz (G3): Bay Storm set the pace from the inside post and One Silk Stocking pressured him from 2nd. Nadette stalked inside and post time favorite School Dance stalked wide. Bay Storm shook off the pressure and stayed gamely until the end, but Quattroelle ($23.60) rallied from last, surged between, and scored by a half-length under Hector Berrios. Bay Storm gamely held the place by a half-length over Closing Remarks, and One Silk Stocking was another neck back in 4th. School Dance, Oakhurst, and Nadette (FR) completed the order of finish. The final time for 8T was 1:35.04.
Santa Monica (G2): Fun to Dream ($3.00) lived up to her top billing for Hernandez/Baffert. Anacapa and Samurai Charm battled early, and pressed Awake At Midnyte chased, led, and was run down by Baffert’s favorite. The winning margin was 2 1/2 lights, and Awake At Midnyte was clearly second best. Samurai Charm was a clear 3rd and Lady T was far in front of Angel Nadeshiko and Anacapa. The finial time for seven panels was 1:22.75.
Thunder Road (G3): This was an absolute thriller. Dark Shift (GB) set the pace and tried hard throughout, but the closers were coming. Earls Rock (IRE) lurked behind the speed from the inside post under Prat, and he split horses and hit the front in deep stretch, but Du Jour was breathing down his neck and the finish was tight. In the end, it was Earls Rock ($9.80) by a nose over Du Jour, with pace pressing favorite Air Force Red another neck back in 3rd. Iridio (ARG) completed the Superfecta at 33-1 and was followed by Dark Shift, Cabo Spirit, Bob and Jackie, Kiss Today Goodbye, Anaconda, Hit the Road, and There Goes Harvard. The final time for 8T was 1:34.05.
The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $312,689, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $8,351.22. The jackpot carryover stands at $391,631, and there is a Mandatory payout on Sunday, Feb. 5. The pool is expected to exceed $3 million.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (2-5-23)
Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (6.5f, 8f. On the turf course, a 7-1 stalker tallied at 8f, a pressing favorite easily earned her diploma at 6f, a 5-1 midpack stalker captured the San Marcos (G3) at 1 1/4 miles, an outside presser scored at 9-1 odds down the hill, and a stalking favorite ended the program with a flat mile victory (rail at 10 feet).
Juan Hernandez booted home a pair. Johnny V and Michael McCarthy teamed up for two wins.
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 2-5-23
San Marcos (G3): 47-1 outsider Evan Harlan set sail for the early lead and my best bet top choice Masteroffoxhounds chased from 2nd under Rispoli. Prince Abama (IRE) lurked in midpack under Prat and returnee Say the Word bided his time under Kent D. Masteroffoxhounds make the first move and got clear in the lane, but Prince Abama ($12.60) angled out in the stretch and came running under Prat, and he got up late to tally by a neck. Masteroffoxhounds ran a winning race but settled for the place, and Opry landed the show under Dettori at 12-1. Say the Word got going too late and missed the show by a neck, and The Grey Wizard (IRE) rallied from last to split the field. Dicey Mo Chara (GB), Yes This Time, Avenue, Evan Harlan, and Cash Equity also ran. The final time was 2:01.42.
Palos Verdes (G3): Straight No Chaser was aggressively handled from the inside post as expected, and the favorite was pressed by second betting choice Hopkins. Those two stayed clear, and Hopkins ($6.20) made his move outside under Hernandez, and he kicked away and scored by 2 1/4 lengths. My value top choice Radical Right rallied to finish a clear 2nd, and Straight No Chaser crossed the line in 3rd. Howbeit stalked, dropped back, and came again for 4th, and McLaren Vale and Escape Route also ran. The final time for 6f was 1:08.80.
The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $3,967,468 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $935.70. I tabbed all six winners on my suggested $48 ticket. The jackpot carryover starts over on Friday.
