Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 4-2-23

Pasadena (8T): Mucino scratched and that left a field of 4. Johannes was the strong favorite and she was patiently handled in her first route attempt. Wizard of Westwood got to the front under Dettori and Game Time chased from 2nd. Keen to Go and Johannes were behind those runners. They pretty much stayed in that position until the halfway point. Game Time turned up the heat and Johannes was on the move. The latter was traveling sweetly under Rispoli and she struck the front and bounded away to score by a widening 3 1/2 lengths. Game Time was 2nd and Wizard of Westwood was a clear 3rd. Keen to Go trailed. The winner paid $2.60 and the final time was 1:33.79. Tim Yakteen’s promising filly is ready to tackle graded company.

American Stakes (G3): Six broke from the gate in this decent turf mile affair. First time gelding Bob and Jackie showed the way early as expected. Exaulted was in chase mode and ended up in a great spot under Hernandez. Earls Rock (IRE) and Du Jour were side-by-side, and Vanzzy and Iridio (ARG) bided their time. Bob and Jackie was stubborn up front but Exaulted ($5.80) came up and engaged, and he edged away to score by a length and a half. Iridio found his best side late and ran on nicely for the place, and Bob and Jackie held the show in a solid effort. Du Jour was a nose better than Earls Rock for 4th, and Vanzzy trailed. The final time was 1:33.65.
