Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 4-22-23
Kona Gold (G3): Brickyard Ride was the defending champ. He figured to make the early lead and he did just that. My top choice Anarchist chased from the inside post and gave Brickyard Ride ($3.60) a real tussle, but the latter refused to lose and ended up prevailing by a half-length. Anarchist ran too good to lose and was 4+ clear of show finisher Positivity. Armagnac and Trumped also ran. The final time for 6.5f was 1:15.84.
Californian (G2): Defunded was the prohibitive favorite. He was expected to be all over the pace but he hopped at the start and was away last under Hernandez. Midnight Mammoth set a pressured pace and Royal Ship was working out a nice outside tactical trip. Defunded ($2.40) remained at the back for a good six panels, and he started his wide move. He made nice progress and was picking off rivals in short order. He struck the front in midstretch and edged away to score by three lengths. Royal Ship finished 2nd and Midnight Mammoth landed the show. Kiss Today Goodbye, Parnelli, and Mr. Impossible completed the field. The final time for 1 1/8 miles was 1:48.91.
The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $163,765, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $2,447.78. The jackpot carryover stands at $93,475.
