Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (4-29-23)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (4.5f, 8f, 8.5f). On the turf course, a patient midpack runner won the opener at 7-2 odds, a last-to-first closer won the Providencia (G3) at 9f, a 5-1 closer graduated at 6.5f, a front running favorite tallied at 9f, a dueling front runner scored at 6.5f, and a stalking favorite from an outer post won the hillside finale.

Ramon Vazquez booted home four winners. Juan Hernandez guided home three winners. Phil D’Amato (turf) and Peter Miller (sprints) both saddled two winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 4-29-23

Providencia (G3): Broadway Girls and Ancient Peace got clear of the others in the early going, and they were going too fast. My value top choice Paris Secret ($8.00) was last early in the 5-horse field, and she made a smart outside move, got first run, and safely held off Pleasant Wave to win by 3/4ths of a length. The latter kept on coming in the lane and was clearly second best. Broadway Girls nipped Ancient Peace for the show and Una Palabra trailed. The final time was 1:47.50. The winner, ridden expertly by Kazushi Kimura, made a nice forward move in her second US start for Phil D’Amato.

Santa Maria (G2): Adare Manor ($3.40) dominated this one throughout as the chalk. She made the lead under Juan Hernandez, stayed clear by a length or so, and kicked away to win by 4 3/4 lengths. Big Switch did all of the pace dirty work chasing Adare Manor. She got a bit tired in the lane due to that, and Bellamore got past her and was second best. Big Switch was best of the rest in third. She is a CA-bred and they have plenty of stakes options going forward. Smoothlikebuttah and Kirstenbosch trailed. The final time was 1:43.10.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $213,362, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,061.38. The jackpot carryover stands at $215,040.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (4-30-23)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (8f, 4.5f). On the turf course, a 9-2 front runner held on by a nose in the 6.5f opener, a 9-1 stalker graduated at one mile, a 2-1 stalker won the Santa Barbara at 1 1/2 miles, a 3-1 stalker won the Wilshire (G3) at one mile, and a 5-1 stalker earned her diploma at 6.5f (rail at 10 feet).

Armando Aguilar and Tiago Pereira both booted home a pair. Dan Blacker saddled two winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 4-30-23

Santa Barbara (12T): Exit Soul got out there and set the pace from the inside post at 9-1 odds under Kent D, and she hung in there for quite some time. She would not go away in the lane but Queen Ofthe Temple ($6.40) was traveling best of all and held off post time favorite Duvet Day (IRE) to score by a neck. Exit Soul was best of the rest in third, and he missed all of the candy by a neck and a head. Joe Bravo gave the winner a cagey ride. The final time was 2:26.64.

Wilshire (G3): Canoodling set honest fractions under Rispoli. Very Scary was content to chase under Kent D, and my top choice Macadamia ($8.20) stalked from the inside post, led, and scored by a length under Tiago Pereira. Quattroelle (IRE) rallied from last to complete the exacta, and Very Scary held off Closing Remarks for the show. Canoodling weakened to fifth and Thunder Run trailed. The final time was 1:33.66.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $273,957, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $14,635.22. The jackpot carryover stands at $277,762.
