Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 6f, 6.5f). On the turf course, a stalking favorite took the flat mile opener, a front running favorite won at 5.5f, a 5-2 stalker tallied at one mile, an 11-1 stalker pulled off the upset at a flat mile, and a stalking favorite captured the finale at one mile (rail at 20 feet).

Hat trick for Juan Hernandez (2 turf routes). Riding doubles for Umberto Rispoli (sprints) and Ramon Vazquez (dirt sprints).

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $186,372, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $3,211.72. The jackpot carryover stands at $235,132.

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (5f, 6f, 5.5f). On the turf course, a last-to-first closer scored at 6-1 odds in the downhill opener, a last-to-first closer won at 7-2 odds at one mile, a 7-2 stalker tallied at one mile, a 7-2 closer struck at 6.5f, a 17-1 stalker scored at one mile, and a closing favorite captured the downhill finale (rail at 10 feet).

Turf hat trick for Antonio Fresu. Geovanni Franco and Phil D’Amato teamed up for two dirt sprint wins. Hector Berrios and Jeff Mullins teamed up for two turf wins. Mark Glatt saddled two turf winners and Fresu rode both.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 6-17-23

Fasig-Tipton Debutante (5f): Four fillies dashed five panels and Golden Gate shipper Grand Slam Smile ($9.40) pressed the pace and caught Becky’s Dream late to score by a half-length under Frank Alvarado. It was another 5+ back to beaten favorite Crazy Hot and first timer Stormy Gal trailed throughout. The final time was 58.41.

Fast-Tipton Futurity (5f): Mirahmadi took all the money for Baffert but Tranche ($42) hit the front and kept on going in a romping 7+ length tally for Edwin Maldonado and Luis Mendez. Mirahmadi outmaneuvered Refocus for the runner-up spot. Going Mobile and Next Level also ran. The final time was 57.68.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $484,844 and nobody had six winners. Multiple tickets with five winners paid $1,335.64. The jackpot carryover stands at $346,136 and there is a mandatory payout on closing Sunday.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (6-18-23)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at five panels on dirt. On the turf course, a 2-1 stalker captured the Possibly Perfect at 1 1/4 miles, a 6-1 stalker won at one mile, a 5-2 closer dominated the San Juan Capistrano at 1 3/4 miles, a stalking favorite scored at 6f, a 2-1 favorite graduated at 6.5f, a 5-2 midpack stalker tallied at 6f, and a 7-2 front runner ended the meet with a maiden victory at one mile.

Hat trick for Juan Hernandez (2 turf). Riding doubles for Kent Desormeaux (turf) and Diego Herrera (routes). Neil Drysdale saddled two turf route winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 6-18-23

Possibly Perfect (10T): Australia Mia went to the lead, got clear by a length, and tried to steal it. Buzz of New York chased from second but came up empty. Neige Blanche ($6.80), making her first start since October 2022, came after Australia Mia, got the jump on Queen Ofthe Temple, and scored by a neck. The latter was able to get past Australia Mia to secure the place by a head. Those three were clear of Zeyaraat and beaten favorite Buzz of New York. The final time was 2:01.44.

San Juan Capistrano (G3): Offlee Naughty was the even money favorite in the 1 3/4 miles endurance test. Opry set the pace as expected and Birth of Cool chased from second, but the distance tripped them up. Planetario ($7.40) loved this long journey. He sat back for a good 1 1/4 miles before making his move. He shot to the front in the stretch and bounded away to score by 4 1/2 lengths. Hector Berrios rode the impressive winner for Richard Mandella. Office Naughty rallied for the place and supplementary nominee Rimprotector finished an even third as the longest shot on the board. Duvet Day (IRE), Opry, and Birth of Cool also ran. The final time of 2:48.08 was a new track record.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $3,742,427 and multiple tickets with all six winners paid $11,217.68. There was a mandatory payout on closing Sunday.
