Comments: Five horses broke from the gate and Turnerloose was the quickest early, but she was well behind the others at the end. Linda’s Gift ($3.00) was clearly best. She chased from second, took over, and won by a very easy 3 1/2 lengths for Tiago Pereira and Richard Mandella. Musical Rhapsody nipped Duvet Day by a nose for the runner-up spot.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (6-16-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three running winners on dirt (8f, 5f, 6f). On the turf course, an 11-1 stalked won the 6f opener, front running favorite Final Boss won the Cinema at 1 1/8 miles, closing favorite Planetario win the San Juan Capistrano (G3) at 1 3/4 miles, a 6-1 closer scored at one mile, a 5-1 midpack closer got up late to graduate at 1 1/8 miles, and a 7-1 dueling front runner won the hillside finale.

Edwin Maldonado guided home three winners (2 turf). Geovanni Franco booted home a pair of dirt sprint winners. Mark Glatt (dirt routes) and Jeff Mullins (turf) both saddled two winners.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 6-16-24

Cinema (1 1/8 miles turf)
Fractions: 23.27, 47.38, 1:10.49, 1:34.75, 1:46.62
Top 3 Finishers: Final Boss, Blue Eyed George, British Isles

Comments: Final Boss ($4) controlled the pace and was clear throughout. That about sums it up. He won by 1 3/4 lengths for Juan Hernandez and John Sadler. Blue Eyed George chased from second and stayed there throughout, and British Isles stalked outside and just held the show by a nose over Sea Singer (IRE).

Grade 3 San Juan Capistrano (1 3/4 miles turf)
Fractions: 48.35, 1:12.67, 1:39.47, 2:06.04, 2:31.32, 2:46.95 (new track record)
Top 3 Finishers: Planetario (BRZ), Rockemperor (IRE), Rimprotector

Comments: Planetario ($3.40) defended his title in this turf marathon. He was patiently handled under Hector Berrios, and he swung into action in the lane and ran down Rockemperor to score by a neck. The latter stalked, led, and was down late. Rimprotector pressed the pace and was best of the rest in third. Richard Mandella saddled the winner and he might go next in the Del Mar Handicap (G2) at 1 3/8 miles on turf at Del Mar on Aug. 31.
