Check out my Saturday (7-20-24) Del Mar Race 7 analysis below.
DMR 7 (Oceanside, 3yo, 8T) – Post Time 8:13pm EDT
Primary – #4 GUY NAMED JOE, #2 Formidable Man
Secondary – #3 King of Gosford, #10 Rothschild
Horse Comments:
#4 Guy Named Joe (5-1) ran well in all five starts at one mile on turf. He graduated at this distance and missed by a head in the Pasadena on March 16 (blinkers on). He shipped to Keeneland and was 8th of 12 (beaten 2.75 lengths) in the Transylvania (G3) on April 5, and turned back and finished third in the Desert Code at 6.5T on May 19. Juan Hernandez stays put and he should get pace to chase.
#2 Formidable Man (9-2) is a fresh early-pressing colt returning to SoCal. He graduated at this course/distance in his career debut last summer. He won a 9T optional-claiming event at SA in March, and shipped to CD and was second in the American Turf (G2) and 6th in the Audubon in his last pair. He reconnects with his winning rider Umberto Rispoli.
#3 King of Gosford (5-2) is a talented sprinter trying a route of ground for the first time in his 10th career start. Phil D’Amato’s early-pressing gelding exits back-to-back stakes wins at 6.5T and his winning pilot Fresu stays put. He is one of several entrants with the ability to impact the pace.
#10 Rothschild (12-1) switched to turf and rallied to miss by a neck when last seen in the Cecil B. DeMille (G3) late last year. Yakteen shows a +ROI with this type of layoff runner and the $700k Uncle Mo colt should be finishing if he is ready to roll in his first start in 7+ months.
