Check out my Thursday (7-25-24) Del Mar Race 7 analysis below.
DMR 7 (G3 Cougar II, 12f) – Post Time 8:07pm EDT
Primary – #3 REINCARNATE
Secondary – #2 Midnight Mammoth, #4 Salesman, #1 Calm Sea
Horse Comments:
#3 Reincarnate (9-5) does his best work on fast dirt (9 3-2-2). He stalked the pace and finished third in the G1 Big ‘Cap at 1 1/4 miles on March 3. In his last two outings, he was fourth in the G2 Oaklawn ‘Cap and a clear second behind his stablemate Mr Fisk in the G2 Gold Cup at a mile and a quarter. His winning pilot Juan Hernandez should put him in the race from the outset and he might be able to outlast these.
#2 Midnight Mammoth (3-1) exits back-to-back prominent throughout wins vs. lesser company at shorter distances. The sharp gelding owns competitive ratings and is not out of this if he handles the marathon distance.
#4 Salesman (8-5) was terrible in his lone try this year in the Big ‘Cap. The added distance of this race is his friend. He got loose and aired in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G2) at 1 5/8 miles on the BC undercard last fall, and that was by far his best effort in five starts in this country. Richard Mandella excels with this type of layoff runner and he is training forwardly for this. I am not quite sure what we are going to get from him in this spot.
#1 Calm Sea (6-1) is a razor sharp front runner exiting back-to-back wins at a mile and a quarter on turf. He will probably play catch me if you can from the inside post.
