Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (10-12-24)
Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (5.5f, 8.5f). Stalkers won the other three dirt races. On the turf course, a 19-1 dueling front runner from the inside post graduated in the 6f opener, a 3-1 stalker scored by a nose at 9f, a 5-1 closer tallied at one mile, and a 10-1 outside stalker won the California Distaff Handicap on the downhill course.
Juan Hernandez and Bob Baffert teamed up for three dirt route wins including a pair in the MSW ranks.
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 10-12-24
California Distaff Handicap (6.5T hillside): Sassy Nature set the pace as anticipated and the 6 1/2 furlong distance was too far for her as expected. My top choice Stay and Scam was hammered in the wagering and she worked out a nice tactical trip, but she had no answer for outside stalker Grand Slam Smile and Big Summer. Those two proved best late with Grand Slam Smile ($23.40) winning by a length. Stay and Scam was outkicked in deep stretch and held the show by a neck over 53-1 longshot Andiamo Ragazza. Rose Maddox, Sassy Nature, Prancingthruparis, Diamond Bar Gal, Chismosa, Rebalation, and Back On Track also ran. The final time on the downhill course was 1:12.40 and Frank Alvarado rode the sophomore winner for Steve Specht.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $106,159 and nobody had all six winners. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $1,869.60. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $56,712 when live racing resumes Sunday.

Fast main track and firm turf course. Four front running sprint winners on a speed favoring dirt oval (6.5f, 6f, 6f, 5.5f). On the turf course, a 5-1 stalker graduated in the 6f opener, a 1-2 favorite set the pace and held on by a head at one mile, a 9-2 stalker graduated at one mile, 3-1 stalker On the Whim won the California Flag Handicap on the downhill course, and a stalking favorite graduated in the flat mile finale (rail at 20 feet).
Kyle Frey and Umberto Rispoli both booted home a pair.
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 10-13-24
California Flag Handicap (CA-bred, 6.5T hillside): Johnny Podres was the favorite but he never got involved from off the pace. My top choice On the Whim ($8) stalked, pounced, and caught front runner Fast Buck to win by a half-length. None Above the Law rallied for the show and was followed by So I’m Told, Hacking It Up, Johnny Podres, Barely Functional, and Last Call London. The final time was 1:11.54 and Tiago Pereira rode the winner for Dean Pederson.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $377,228 and tickets with six winners paid $2,134.30. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $41.20.

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (8f, 5.5f, 8f). On the turf course, a 16-1 front runner upset the flat mile opener, a 7-1 stalker scored from the inside post on the downhill course, a 3-1 stalker scored from post 10 at one mile, inside stalking favorite Queen of the Mud (IRE) won the Swingtime at one mile, and a 31-1 closer upset the flat mile finale (rail at 10 feet).
Hat trick for Kazushi Kimura (2 dirt wins). George Papaprodromou saddled two more winners.
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 10-14-24
The lone stakes on Monday was the restricted Swingtime for fillies and mares traveling one mile on the turf course. The opening quarter was 22.80 and the two early runners (Ankyrah, Gypsy Woman) were nowhere around the end. 3-2 favorite Queen of the Mud (IRE) stalked inside under Juan Hernandez, waited for running room, hit the front in the lane, and edged away to win by a length and a quarter. Yerwanthere (IRE) rallied from last to land the place and Lakota Spirit closed from off the pace to complete the trifecta. Miss Lizzy stalked the pace and finished an even fourth, and Queens Command (IRE), Moment’s Pleasure, Royal Charter (GB), Ankyrah, and Gypsy Woman (IRE) also ran. Graham Motion saddled the winner and this was her first start around two turns. She paid $5 to win and stopped the clock in 1:35.45.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $89,538 and nobody had all six winners. Tickets with five winners paid $2,777.80. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $47,835 when live racing resumes on Friday.
