Check out my Sunday (5-18-25) Woodbine Race 8 analysis below.
WO 8 (King Corrie, 3-year-olds, 7 furlongs all-weather) – Post Time 5:01 PM ET
Primary – #3 MADAME OBEY, #1 Hibiscus
Secondary – #4 Thundering, #5 Church and State
Horse Comments:
#3 Madame Obey (4-1) stalked the pace and got up by a head in her local 6f bow late last year. She broke slow from the inside post and finished an okay third at TP Feb. 13, and her number improved that day. Actually, that was the best last-race speed rating by 6 points. A stalking trip is likely and we will find out if she can navigate this extended sprint.
#1 Hibiscus (8-1) is Madame Obey’s stablemate and she set a fast, pressured pace before weakening to last of 12 in her turf route bow at KEE April 12. She took money in her debut and the runner-up was a next-out winner. She sports two local moves for this and better seems likely, and she might try to make the lead from the inside post in a race with a murky pace scenario. My top two contenders were both entered in the Ruling Angel for fillies at this course and distance May 17 and they scratched. I looked at that race and it was a much deeper, competive heat.
#4 Thundering (9-5) was a wide third in his local seven panel bow, and he stalked and graduated in the Display at this course and distance second time out. He stretched out and split an 8-horse field in the Grey (G3), and returned from a layoff and never lifted a hoof in the local Woodstock at 6f April 27. This is a better distance and he might show more, but it is also possible that he has failed to improve from age 2 to 3.
#5 Church and State (2-1) rallied from 10th to win his course/distance bow, and stretched out and scored again second time out. He lost lasix in the Leonatus at TP Jan. 18 (one mile), and he split an 8-horse field. There were some decent runners in the Leonatus. Winner Baby Max finished second in his next start in the Battaglia Memorial, and runner-up Chunk of Gold would go on to finish second in the Risen Star (G2) and LA Derby (G2). He got sick and missed the April 27 Woodstock, and got back on the worktab May 10.
