Horse Comments:
#5 Speedy Wilson (5-2) improved his speed ratings in all four starts last year and this is his first outing since winning the local Golden State Juvenile (November 2024). He captured his final two starts last year and will likely stalk the pace under his winning rider Armando Ayuso. Phil D’Amato is expecting him to run a big race off the bench.
#6 Check’s On the Way (6-1) fired trifecta shots in five of his last six starts. He turned back, returned to dirt, and rallied to miss by a half-length at 5.5f May 4, and stalked and scored as the chalk at 6f June 8. He earned an improved number last time.
#1 Style Cat (3-1) dueled and graduated as the favorite in a local dirt sprint last summer. He won a turf sprint in December and was a close third in the Cal Cup Derby (8.5f dirt) in January. He turned back, returned to dirt, and won the Echo Eddie in April, and exits a 6th of 8 in the Snow Chief at 9T. He is back in a dirt sprint and will need to work out a trip from the rail under his winning rider Juan Hernandez.
#4 Drop Um (8-1) crossed the line first in all three starts last year (disqualified and placed 2nd in December). He dueled and was 5th of 8 in the Cal Cup Derby in January, and turned back, returned to dirt, and added blinkers, chased, led, and was clearly second best in the Echo Eddie at 6.5f April 5 (Style Cat 1st). He battled on the pace and split an 8-horse field in the Snow Chief at 9T May 24. He is 2-for-3 with a clear runner-up finish in sprint races.
#7 Western Freedom (5-1) eased in the Snow Chief at 9T May 24 and I will just draw a line through that one. He ran well in all three dirt sprints including back-to-back wins on April 5 and May 4.
