#4 Lorenzo Bernini (5-2) earned an improved number when finishing 4th of 7 at 8T second time out (runner-up next-out winner). He returned to dirt and finished 5th of 6 at 8f Aug. 24. The MSW dropper adds blinkers and this is his first start as a gelding. Umberto Rispoli stays put and he is 4-for-6 with George Papaprodromou.
#3 Both Sides of Bad (5-1) rallied for the place in a dirt sprint in July (winner next-out winner). He moved to the Jeff Mullins barn and showed late interest when finishing 4th of 10 (beaten 1 length) at 8T on Sept. 1 (runner-up next-out winner). Hector Berrios got to know him last time and he is a profitable 4-for-16 with this outfit.
#8 Sweet Odyssey (2-1) dropped to this level and finished an improved third at this course/distance October 2024 (winner next-out winner). He returned from a layoff on Sept. 1 and finished a close third as the beaten favorite, and the runner-up was a next-out winner. Antonio Fresu sticks with Phil D’Amato’s $220k Twirling Candy gelding.
#6 Empire’s Classic (6-1) finished a half-length in front of Sweet Odyssey last fall, and he rallied to miss by a half-length in a Mcl-50k turf route December 2024. That was his fourth straight trifecta finish and he returned from a long layoff and was 6th of 10 in a Mcl-62.5k turf route Sept. 1 (first start in 8+ months). He is 0-for-9 with five minor awards on turf, Kazushi Kimura stays put, and he is back at the $50k level.
