Del Mar Stakes Recaps for Friday (9-4-20)

Generous Portion Stakes – Winner: Good With People ($3.80)

This race started out with ten entrants but late scratches reduced the field to four. Good With People was the favorite and he went to the front as expected. Tacoflavoredkisses tried to put pressure on the early leader, but the eventual winner shook away, opened up by a couple of lengths in the stretch, and held on by a 1/2 length over Touchdown Brown. The latter stalked, dropped back, and came again in a clear runner-up finish. Tacoflavoredkisses was a clear 3rd and Pappy Boyington trailed throughout.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for Saturday (9-5-20)

John C. Mabee Stakes (G2) – Winner: Raymundos Secret ($4.80)

This was not a strong grade two turf route and Raymundos Secret made the most of an easy opportunity. She went right to the front under Flavien Prat and this race was basically over after the opening quarter. She was a couple of lengths in front through moderate splits at that point, and she just maintained that safe margin through upper stretch. Lady Prancealot was making up ground from off the pace and rallied smartly in the lane after finding clear sailing, but it was too late. Raymundos Secret held on by a neck. Catch the Eye finished nicely for the show and inside stalker Zee Drop held 4th. Don’t Blame Judy was next, followed by Quick, Pulpit Rider, and Meal Ticket.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for Sunday (9-6-20)

Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf – Winner: Madone ($5.20)

I picked Madone on top and she did not disappoint as the deserving favorite. The fractions were not fast but the early leaders faded to the back of the field. The closers dominated this one and Madone stumbled at the start and rallied wide for the win under Flavien Prat. Overseas shipper Nimbostratus (FR) rallied to the lead in the lane but shifted out and was demoted from 2nd to 3rd for interfering with Ivy League. The latter had the worst of it from post 11 and was awarded the place under Rispoli. Sweetest Angel, Canoodling, and Inner Beauty (IRE) were next, and they were followed by Tetragonal (IRE), Frazzled, My Princess Ellie, Super Game, and Basilia.

Del Mar Debutante (G1) – Winner: Princess Noor ($3.40)

Bob Baffert’s promising 2-year-old filly Princess Noor made very short work of this field. She crashed into My Girl Red out of the gate, and straightened herself out, tracked outside, took over, and sailed home by 6+ lengths under Victor Espinoza. Forest Caraway chased the winner and was clearly second best, and Illumination set a pressured pace and was best of the rest in 3rd. Get On the Bus saved ground and finished 4th, 17+ lengths in front of Roll Up Mo Money. My Girl Red never recovered from the bumping incident at the start and was eased.

Del Mar Derby (G2) – Winner: Pixelate ($5.00)

Pixelate was an East Coast shipper for Michael Stidham, and she was made the 3-2 favorite based on her solid efforts vs. better turf stakes rivals. This was no gimme however, and Margot’s Boy made him work for the win. 50-1 longshot Dominant Soul had his mind on a front running upset, and he was in front for a very long time. Margot’s Boy chased from 2nd and tracked inside from 3rd, and the former finally wrestled the lead away from the long time leader, but it did not last long. Pixelate surged late and nipped Margot’s Boy by a head, and Dominant Soul held 3rd in a surprising effort. California Kook did not get the right setup and settled for 4th, and Kiss Today Goodbye and Kanderel finished behind her. American Farmer, K P All Systems Go, Guitty (FR), Heywoods Beach, and No Slo Mo trailed.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for Monday (9-7-20)

Del Mar Juvenile Turf – Winner: Big Fish ($11.40)

CA-bred gelding Big Fish has clearly found a home in turf routes. Get Her Number and Ambivalent broke from the two inside posts, and they controlled proceedings into the stretch. Big Fish was always in a good spot in midpack, and he pounced on the leaders and won by a length over late runner Ebeko (IRE). The latter broke from the far outside post in his US bow and went from last to 2nd for Peter Miller. Ambivalent and Get Her Number ended up noses behind the runner-up, and Cotopaxi and Rombauer checked in behind those two. None Above the Law, C’Mon Jenna, Herd Immunity, and Inner Ghost trailed.

Del Mar Futurity (G1) – Winner: Dr. Schivel ($4.80)

Dr. Schivel and runner-up Spielberg both ran quality races in this seven panel affair for juveniles. Spielberg had to go early from the inside post, and Dr. Schivel was always forwardly placed from the outside post. Weston went with those two for a half-mile or so, but it really was a match race between the big two. Dr. Schivel had every advantage from the outside and wore down Spielberg to score by a bit less than two lengths. Spielberg was clearly second best and Weston held 3rd over Scooby. Dyne’s O Mite was another length back in 5th, and Dixie’s Two Stents was bet down but failed to fire and well behind the rest in last place.
