SA 4 (Zuma Beach, 8T)
Primary – #3 CAISSON, #6 Big Fish
Secondary – #4 Cotopaxi, #5 Ebeko
Wagers: #3 to win, Exacta 3/4-5-6, Exacta 4-5-6/3, Trifecta 3-6/3-4-5-6/3-4-5-6

Comments: #3 Caisson (7-2) might be better than his modest numbers. Mandella’s $340k Keeneland sales grad took plenty of action in his bow and was a close up 4th behind subsequent American Pharoah Stakes (G1) runner-up Rombauer in her turf route bow. He pressed the pace and scored by a nose as the strong favorite second time out, and he adds blinkers and Prat stays put. He should be forwardly placed in a race without much early pace. #6 Big Fish (2-1) won both of his flat mile turf starts including the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Sept. 7. He stalked the pace in both of those wins and earned decent late pace ratings. The CA-bred gelding is a solid threat once again. #4 Cotopaxi (4-1) was beaten a length and a quarter in his first US start in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Sept. 7. Mullins is strong with his second grass starters and he had an improved training track work Sept. 27. He has every right to improve. #5 Ebeko (3-1) was up for the place from post 10 in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf. That was his first start in this country and he will try to get involved late.

SA 8 (Surfer Girl, 8T)
Primary – #2 PIZZAZZ, #6 Madone
Secondary – #4 Consternation, #7 Maxim Strider, #8 Nimbostratus
Wagers: #2 to win, Exacta 2-6/2-4-6, Trifecta 2-4-6/2-4-6-7-8/2-4-6

Comments: #2 Pizzazz (8-1) is a surprise entrant for patient trainer Mandella. She was my top choice in the MSW turf route finale Oct. 3 but scratched and is running here instead. She rallied for the place in her five furlong turf sprint bow Aug. 28. She has route breeding on both sides and Mandella shows a profit with his second grass starters. I’ll tab her to upset this crew. #6 Madone (5-2) won both flat mile turf starts under Prat and the race shapes were drastically different. She got plenty of pace help in her MSW bow and won nicely by a length. She was the favorite in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf second time out, and the pace was very slow and she put in a nice late run to tally by a 1/2 length. #4 Consternation (4-1) followed up a solid runner-up finish in her 6.5T debut in Ireland with a nice off the pace MSW flat mile turf score at DMR Sept. 6. She broke slow and swung wide from an outer post last time, and she packs a decent late kick. #7 Maxim Strider (8-1) earned the best last race number in a stalk and pounce victory as the chalk in her DMR turf sprint bow. She should attend the pace. #8 Nimbostratus (3-1) did not have the smoothest journey in her US bow in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Fillies, and she ended up a close 2nd at 19-1 in that event. She fired in her two turf starts in Ireland as well.
