Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for Saturday (10-3-20)

Swingtime Stakes – Winner: Cordiality ($6.60)

Cordiality stole this one. She broke on top and was chased by Muchly throughout. Colonial Creed stalked from 3rd and post time favorite Sedamar stalked outside from 4th. Meal Ticket broke slow and raced wide, and Donut Girl was off slow and never got involved. There was absolutely no movement in this parade. Cordiality ended up winning by a length over Muchly, and all of the runners held their positions from start to finish.

City of Hope Mile (G2) – Winner: Mo Forza ($3.20)

Mo Forza was the overwhelming favorite and he was confidently handled under Prat. He rated patiently from the outside post, moved up around the bend and turning for home, and rallied wide to win gong away by a bit less than two lengths. Sharp Samurai stalked from the inside post and was best of the rest in 2nd. Bob and Jackie chased from 2nd and got past early runner Blitzkrieg to secure the show by a head. Majestic Eagle, Royal Ship, and Restrainedvengence never got seriously involved. The winner has definitely improved from age 3 to 4 and is probably headed to the BC Mile.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for Sunday (10-4-20)

Zuma Beach Stakes – Winner: Ebeko-IRE ($8.80)

There was a dawdling pace in this flat mile turf race for juveniles. Ingest showed the way for the first six furlongs and was tracked by Tarantino, Ebeko-IRE, and Cotopaxi-IRE. The latter wrestled a short lead in the stretch, but that did not last long and Tarantino was in front and briefly looked home free. Ekebo was widest of all in the lane and surged late to win by a nose over Tarantino. Cotopaxi was less than a length back in 3rd and Caisson was another neck back in 4th. Big Fish was the beaten favorite and by far the biggest disappointment in this race. He just did not work out the trip that many expected. He should have been stalking slow splits, but he was last early, wide around the first turn, and tried to rally wide in the lane but only passed two horses. Ingest weakened to 6th and Dennis Celery never got seriously involved and ended up last. The final time was 1:36.55.

Surfer Girl Stakes – Winner: Madone ($4.20)

Unlike the Zuma Beach, this one mile turf affair for juvenile fillies had a fast pace. Reign of Fire was aggressively handled from the inside post under Edwin Maldonado. Maxim Strider chased from 2nd and Nimbostratus was in the hunt from 3rd. Pizzazz stalked inside and was anxious to get going. Madone and Flavien Prat had to be enjoying the honest fractions up front, and they made a bold move and rallied wide to hit the front in the lane, and that decisive move made all the difference. Tetragonal-IRE was patiently handed in 9th and last for at least the opening six furlongs, and the 25-1 longshot made a sustained, belated run widest of all in the lane but the wire was coming up quickly and she came up a neck short. Pizzazz won the 3-way battle for 3rd and she finished better than the other pace chasers. I think she might have a decent future. She was entered in a maiden race that dat before this event, but scratched and ran a quality race throughout for Richard Mandella. Closing Remarks and Canoodling were right there for show honors but both came up a tad short, and they were followed by Maxim Strider, Consternation-IRE, Nimbostratus-FR, and Reign of Fire. They stopped the clock in 1:34.83.
