Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-20-21

Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) Recap – Edgeway ($4.00)

Edgeway had the right early-pressing trip from post 3 in this four-horse dash. Joe Bravo put the even money favorite on the early lead, and he was content to let Stellar Sound go up to her inside and take a short advantage. Edgeway battled right back, put away Stellar Sound, and cruised safely across the line to score by a comfortable length while under wraps late. Proud Emma rallied from last and found her best stride late to secure the runner-up spot. Stellar Sound weakened to 4th and Scotish Star (ARG) trailed.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (8-21-21)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6,5f, 5.5f). Tactical types won the other four dirt races on a speed favoring day. The turf course winners were a closer from the outside post at 8.5T, a front runner at 8.5T, a closer at 8T, a midpack stalker at 9T, and a closer at 11T.

With multiple ship and win horses competing at Del Mar, I am keeping track of where the winners are coming from. On Saturday, five winners last started at the current DMR meet, and one of them was exiting a victory (Red Valor). Three winners last raced at SA June 2021, and Mo Forza last raced at SA autumn 2020. The other two winners were juvenile FTS.

Hat trick for Flavien Prat. Joel Rosario booted home a pair. Juan Hernandez and Richard Mandella teamed up for two wins. Phil D’Amato saddled two winners.

Pacific Classic Day Stakes Report

Let’s look back at the Pacific Classic Day stakes races. First up was the Torrey Pines (G3), and post time favorite Private Mission dominated for Bob Baffert and Flavien Prat. She pressed from the outside post, took over, and steamrolled her competition in a 6+ length tally over hard trying CA-bred filly I’m So Anna. Forest Caraway was best of the rest in 3rd.

In other stakes action, Mo Forza returned from a layoff of more than ten months to rally for a head victory over Smooth Like Strait in the Del Mar Mile (G2). Hit the Road was in the hunt throughout and checked in 3rd. Early leader Neptune’s Storm weakened to 4th and Count Again trailed throughout.

The Del Mar Oaks (G1) was a riders race and Flavien Prat stalked the pace aboard favorite Going Global (IRE), and he got the jump on Closing Remarks to score by a length. The latter saved ground, waited for racing room, and finished nicely for the place under Rispoli. My top choice Fluffy Socks got going too late and settled for the show under Rosario.

The Pacific Classic (G1) was pretty straight forward. Tizamagician set the pace as expected and Tripoli sat a great ground saving tactical trip from the inside post under Pereira. Those two dominated and Tripoli confronted the early leader and inched away to score by a length and a quarter. Tizamagician was clearly second best and Dr. Post was along for the show. The latter was within hailing distance, dropped back, swung wide, and showed nice late interest in a curious trip under Rosario. As for some of the others, Independence Hall (5th) was in the hunt throughout but came up empty at a distance well beyond his best. Express Train (6th) had early trouble and was not able to get into an early contending position. Royal Ship (BRZ) stalked the pace and came up empty when the real running began. His 7th place finish was highly disappointing.

The Del Mar Handicap (G2) completed the 11-race program and Astronaut rallied for the win at 24-1 odds for Espinoza/Shirreffs. Master Piece (CHI) closed from the back of the pace to finish 2nd at 22-1, and Acclimate set the pace and held 3rd at 10-1. United did not have the smoothest trip and was right behind the top three in 4th as the beaten chalk, and Red King raced in traffic under Rosario to finish in a 5th place dead-heat with Say the Word. The latter may have been the unluckiest of all. He somehow found his way to the rail from post 11 under Bravo, and he had plenty of run in the stretch but was bottled up with nowhere to go. He would have been much closer with a better trip and might have won the whole thing under different circumstances.

The 20 cent Rainbow Pick 6 pool was $8,876,771, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $10,521.50. There was a mandatory payout on Saturday.

Aug. 21 Claims: Race 2 – Major Cabbie ($25k, Victor Garcia), P R Radio Star ($25k, George Papaprodromou), Red Valor ($25k, Steve Knapp), Speed Pass ($25k, Ryan Hanson). Race 8 – Family Biz ($40k, Jeff Mullins).

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-22-21

Green Flash Handicap (G3) – Winner: Lieutenant Dan ($6.00)

Lieutenant Dan was just too fast and sharp for this crew. He dueled on the lead with Give Me the Lute, shook clear, and scored by a comfortable 2-1/4 lengths under Geovanni Franco. Give Me the Lute held off my top choice Gregorian Chant by a neck to just secure the runner-up spot, and Kneedeepinsnow rounded out the superfecta as the longest shot on the board at 28-1. Little Juanito, Texas Wedge, Collusion Illusion, and Chasin Munny also ran.
