Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (1-29-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint stakes winners on dirt (7f, 6f). On the turf course, a closer won the 5f opener, a front runner tallied at 6.5f, a stalker tallied at 6.5f, a front runner stole the Megahertz (G3) at one mile, and a front runner took the flat mile finale.

Hat trick for Abel Cedillo. Riding double for Drayden Van Dyke.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-29-22

San Vicente (G2): Forbidden Kingdom ($9.80) ran them off their feet. He broke running from the rail under Juan Hernandez and sped through an opening quarter in 21.86. He pushed two lengths clear after a half in 44.49 and stayed clear the rest of the way in a 2-1/4 length tally. Pinehurst chased inside and held 2nd by a neck over McLaren Vale. Beaten favorite Doppelganger was another neck back in 4th and What In Blazes trailed throughout. The final time for 7f was 1:22.75.

Megahertz (G3): Jockey Roimes Chirinos had theft on his mind. He got Canoodling ($47.40) to the front in this flat mile turf contest, and the pace was very controlled (25.30, 49.87, 1:14.51). She was challenged in the middle but swatted away Burgoo Alley (IRE), and was never seriously threatened again in a half-length tally. Warren’s Showtime just grabbed 2nd by a nose and may have been best. She had nowhere to go along the hedge in upper stretch under Juan Hernandez, and she fought gamely for the place. Avenue de France (FR) was up for 3rd and Bodhicitta (GB) was in the thick of things throughout but could not muster enough in the lane. Madone, Burgoo Alley, and Sloane Garden (GB) trailed.

Palos Verdes (G3): Pace was the key in this spot in this compact field at six panels. Essential Wager ($5.60) was the inside speed and he got clear under Abel Cedillo though an opening quarter in 22.21. He held a measured edge throughout and held off Shooters Shoot to win by a neck. The latter chased, got shuffled a bit, made a run at the leader and was second best. Cezanne rallied to finish a clear 3rd and looked like he needed his first start in 9+ months. Team Merchants pressed from 2nd and weakened to 4th, and Dark Vader trailed. The final time was 1:09.95.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $173,582, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $18,542.50. The jackpot carryover stands at $271,738

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (1-30-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at 6f on dirt. On the turf course, a stalker won the 6.5f opener, a midpack stalker scored at 6f, a closer making a strong early move won at 8f, a stalker won at 10f, and a closer took the 6.5f finale (rail at 20 feet).

Dirt sprint hat trick for Tyler Baze.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-30-22

Lady of Shamrock Stakes: Joe Bravo did his best impression of Umberto Rispoli out there in this flat mile turf stakes for sophomore fillies. He made a decisive early move aboard Lucky Girl (IRE), and getting the jump on overseas shipper and post time favorite Island of Love (IRE) made all the difference. The latter swung outside and went after Lucky Girl ($15.60) turning for home, but she could never make up any ground and ended up a length and three-quarters behind the winner. Gold Dragon Queen was no match for the top two but was best of the rest in 3rd. Travel Smart had an uncomfortable start and finished an even 4th. Early leader Shoppingforpharoah weakened to 5th and Fuente Ovejuna (GB) faded to last after chasing the pace for a half-mile or so.

San Marcos Stakes (G2): It was nice to see Friar’s Road ($4.20) put it all together and pick up a much deserves stakes victory in this ten furlong test contest for Michael McCarthy. Acclimate and Bob and Jackie set legit fractions and Friar’s Road was comfortable throughout in 3rd under Prat. He pounced on the early leaders in the lane and pulled well clear to win by 4-1/4 lengths. Bob and Jackie gamely held the place over late running second choice Say the Word. Lincoln Hawk edged a fading Acclimate for 4th in this compact field.

Baffle Stakes: The pace was not fast in this 6.5T affair for sophomore males. Olympic Legend tried to steal it at 77-1 odds and ran better than expected, but this one was all about Maglev (IRE). The latter was the solid favorite breaking from the inside post, and he emphatically went last-to-first in a 3-3/4 length tally under Rispoli. Don’t Swear Dave did not have the smoothest journey in a rallying runner-up finish, and Olympic Legend just held 3rd over Echosmith (IRE). Franklin One Star, Smuggler’s Run, Shut Up Michael (IRE), and Il Capitano also ran. The winner stopped the clock in 1:15.74 and paid $4.40.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $183,906, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $2,728.84. The jackpot carryover stands at $313,840.

Jan 30 Claims: Race 4 – La Pulcinela ($20k, Manuel Ortiz Sr.).
