Four Kentucky Derby 2022 points races have been run so far this year and Secret Oath was the most impressive winner of the bunch. The D. Wayne Lukas trainee romped in the Martha Washington Stakes at Oaklawn Park in Jan. 29 and earned a decent speed rating that day. She owns a classy route pedigree and should continue to progress.

Kentucky Oaks 2022 Points Race Results

Grade 2 Santa Ynez (1-8-22) – Winner: Under the Stars ($3.80)

The lone stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita was the Santa Ynez (G2) for sophomore fillies, and Under the Stars was ultra-game as the chalk for Prat/Baffert. She battled on the pace from the rail and put away Miss Mattie B. Under the Stars got a fresh challenge from Awake At Midnyte in the lane, and she smartly turned that one away to score by a bit less than a length. Awake Ay Midnyte was clearly second best and Miss Mattie B was best of the rest in 3rd. Big Switch and Big Shamrock were next, and Mimajoon eased. The final time for 7f was 1:22.51.

Silverbulletday (1-22-22) – Winner: La Crete ($4.20)

This race had potential but I was not overly impressed with any of these. La Crete controlled the pace, turned away Fannie and Freddie, and scored by a length. They was clear of stalking show finisher Bernabreezy. Candy Raid, Miss Chamita, and Sweet as Pie competed the six pack. La Crete is now 2-for-2 and has a strong pedigree for Asmussen, but she will need to run better to win the next prep. Swatting away Fannie and Freddie is no great accomplishment. The latter blew a clear stretch lead in the Untapable Stakes and failed to stay on again. She has distance limitations.

Busanda (1-23-22) – Winner: Magic Circle ($4.10)

This was a slow 9f prep (1:51.29), and the final fraction was almost 14 seconds. Magic Circle controlled the pace and was never seriously threatened in a 2-3/4 length victory for Jose Ortiz and Rudy Rodriguez. Morning Matcha rallied for the place and Reigning Chick stalked the pace and was 6+ clear of Rosebug. Waters of Merom and Gamestonks also competed.

Martha Washington (1-29-22) – Winner: Secret Oath ($3.00)

D. Wayne Lukas is on the Oaks trail after Secret Oath ran her record to 3-for-5 with a facile victory in this 8.5f affair at Oaklawn Park. Second betting choice Optionality showed the way through tepid fractions and Secret Oath stalked from the outside post. The latter took over while wide and was just cruising along under Luis Contreras. She streaked across the line 7+ length clear of Optionality (clearly second best). Como Square won her first two sprints and stretched out, saved ground chasing the pace, and was not match for the top pair while clear of the rest. Hypersport, Princess Pauline, and Cupid’s Music also ran. The final time was 1:46.21. For comparison purposes, Newgrange won the Southwest (G3) at the same distance in 1:45.83.
