Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (3-25-23)

Fast main track and good turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (5.5f, 6f). On the turf course, a 5-2 favorite rallied to graduate in the flat mile opener, a 7-1 front runner held on by a nose at 8f, a slow starter rallied to graduate at 6f, a closing favorite easily earned his diploma at 8f, and a 3-2 favorite wired the field in the one mile finale (rail at 30 feet).

Juan Hernandez guided home three winners (2 turf route winners). Tiago Pereira also brought home three winners. Steve Knapp saddled three winners (2 turf winners), and Pereira rode two. Mark Glatt saddled two sprint winners and Hernandez rode both.

Desert Stormer (G3): This race was flipped upside down following the scratch of strong morning line favorite Elm Drive. That development left a field of four, and Dance to the Music inherited favoritism. Violent Runner was the second betting choice and she was sent hard from the inside post. Dance to the Music hooked up with the inside filly from the outset and they battled all the way around the track. Stella Noir and Half past Twelve were the other two entrants but they never got seriously involved. Dance to the Music ($4.40) slowly edged clear late and scored by a length. Violent Runner was clearly second best and Stella Noir was well clear of Half Past Twelve. The final time was 1:10.45.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $87,703, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $248.54. The jackpot carryover stands at $225,690.

March 25 Claims: Race 2 – Strut On Louie ($25k, Anthony Saavedra). Race 6 – Semi Sweet ($12.5k, Lorenzo Campuzano), Tizzy Twister ($12.5k, Steve Knapp).

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (3-26-23)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (8f, 6f). On the turf course, a 5-1 stalker graduated in the 6f opener, a 7-2 stalker tallied at 6f, a 5-1 closer earned her diploma at one mile, a front runner stole the Angels Flight on the hillside course, and a stalking favorite graduated in the flat mile finale.

Hat trick for Ramon Vazquez. A pair of winners for trainer George Papaprodromou.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 3-26-23

Angels Flight (6.5T): Pleasant Wave scratched and five horses ended up competing in this $100k hillside sprint. Fast and Shiny ($17.20) made the early lead under Abel Cedillo and it was curtains for the others due to the moderate fractions (22.38 and 44.56). Those are not quick splits down the hill, and she maintained her advantage throughout and scored by a half-length. My top choice Teena Ella tried to apply pace pressure. At first she went inside, and eventually switched out and chased the early leader. She came out on the dirt crossing and gallantly ran on through the lane but came up a bit short in a solid effort in her first start vs. winners. Beaten favorite Manhattan Jungle (IRE) had the misfortune of breaking from the inside post, which is rarely a good spot down the dip. She stalked inside, came out, and was pushed very wide on the dirt crossing. She kept plugging away for show dough. Broadway Girls and Ragtime Rose also ran. The final time was 1:13.19.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $128,751, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $1,324.64. The jackpot carryover stands at $255,165.

March 26 Claims: Race 2 – Handsome Gary ($16k, Jonathan Wong), Strike That ($16k, George Papaprodromou). Race 9 – Shadow Creek ($50k, George Papaprodromou).
