Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running winners on dirt (8f, 6f). On the turf course, a 5-2 presser won the 6f opener by a nose, a well-backed stalker scored at 6.5f, a 6-1 dueling front runner graduated at 6f, a 16-1 closer tallied at 6f, and a closing favorite won the San Luis Rey (G3) at a mile and a half (rail at 20 feet).
No riding doubles on Saturday. Mark Glatt saddled three main track winners (2 sprints).
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 5-13-23
San Luis Rey (G3): My value top choice Opry tried to steal this one on the front end under Mike Smith. He was clear of the others for quite some time but started to get a bit weary late. Post time favorite Offlee Naughty ($5.20) was patiently ridden early, moved up inside and hit the rail, recovered quickly and ran on nicely in the stretch to score by a length and a quarter. Planetario (BRZ) showed nice late interest and finished nicely for the place under Berrios in his first start since June 2022. Dicey Mo Chara (GB) chased the pace and was best of the rest in third. Opry weakened to fourth and was followed by Rimprotector, Explain This Audit, and Midcourt. Umberto Rispoli rode the winner for Michael McCarthy, and the final time was 2:24.87.
The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $100,250, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $13,387.78. The jackpot carryover stands at $100,160.
