Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (3-23-24)

Fast main track and good turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (6f, 8f, 6f). On the turf course, a 17-1 midpack stalker graduated in the flat mile opener, a front runner tallied as the even money favorite at 6f, a 2-1 midpack stalker scored down the hill, a stalking favorite won the G3 San Luis Rey at 1 1/2 miles, and a 2-1 front runner earned her diploma in the flat mile finale (rail at 10 feet).

Kyle Frey booted home a pair. Juan Hernandez and Bob Baffert teamed up for two wins on the main track.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 3-23-24

Grade 3 San Luis Rey (12T): Some interesting cat and mouse games going on in this race. Balladeer got clear early as expected. Planetario (BRZ) chased from second, and Missed the Cut moved early, grabbed second, and cut into the leading margin. Balladeer shook loose again, and Planetario and a wide Resultant made early moves on the backstretch. Antonio Fresu did not take the bait and remained patient aboard Missed the Cut. Planetario hit the front in the lane but Missed the Cut was always traveling smoothly and was moving like a winner in the late stages. He scored by a length and a quarter as my top choice. Planetario was clearly second best and Offlee Naughty finished up nicely in. Clear show finish in his first start since October 2023. Balladeer and Resultant finished 4th and 5th. John Sadler saddled the winner and the final time was 2:26.98.

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $106,230 and multiple tickets with six winners paid $2,269.90. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $42.50.

March 23 Claims: Race 4 – Letshaveonemore ($25k, Antonio Garcia).

Sensational Star (6.5T hillside): Clovis Connection made the lead from the outside post but this race was all about the patient runners. Clovis Connection edged my top choice Catalina Eddy for the show, and Coalinga Road, None Above the Law, and Disko Tribute also ran. Librado Barocio saddled the winner and the final time was 1:12.57.
