Check out my Sunday (8-4-24) Del Mar Race 5 analysis below.

DMR 5 (La Jolla Handicap, 8.5T) – Post Time 6:59pm EDT
Primary – #6 STAY HOT, #4 King of Gosford
Secondary – #1 Final Boss

Horse Comments:

#6 Stay Hot (7-2) can win this turf route stakes race from off the pace. He ended his juvenile campaign with a local turf route stakes win in the G3 Cecil B. DeMille, and started 2024 with back-to-back stakes wins in the Baffle (6.5T) and Pasadena (8T). He shipped to CD for the G2 American Turf on the Ky Derby undercard on May 4, and the course was wet and hard to handle, and he stalked and ran last of 14. I will draw a line through his last and he can get back on track in SoCal.

#4 King of Gosford (2-1) had a troubled trip as the beaten favorite in the Oceanside on July 20. He is back in two weeks for D’Amato and should be up on the pace under his new rider Umberto Rispoli.

Here is how this race might play out. #1 Final Boss (8-5) makes the lead from the inside post and tries to slow things down under Juan Hernandez, but Rispoli is a good judge of pace and might make his patented early move. If those two go too fast in the middle, Stay Hot might have the late advantage. Final Boss is the favorite after adding blinkers and wiring the field in his last two turf starts at 1 1/8 miles at SA. This turf course is not as kind to early runners.
