Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-16-24
CTT & TOC (11T): Linda’s Gift was intent on the early lead and cleared off early after Sunset Glory (IRE) broke sharply from the inside post. The strong favorite was in control of the race and Tiago Pereira looked back confidently a few times. Sunset Glory, ridden by Umberto Rispoli, chased from second and stayed within striking range, and she inched closer around the final turn and into the stretch. This was a 2-horse race and Sunset Glory ($5.60) wore down Linda’s Gift to prevail by a half-length. The top two were 6 lengths clear of show finisher Musical Rhapsody (IRE). Sun of Hill (BRZ), Duvet Day (IRE), and Federalist Papers also ran. The final time was 2:14.33 and Michael McCarthy saddled the winner.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (8-17-24)
Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running sprint winners on dirt. Pressers captured four of the five main track races. On the turf course, an 8-1 dueling front runner scored at one mile, a stalking favorite graduated at one mile, a 5-1 dueling front runner returned from a long layoff to score at 5f, Iscreamuscream set the pace, lost the lead, and came again to win the G1 Del Mar Oaks at a mile and an eighth, and 7-2 front runner captured the 5f finale (rail at 18 feet).
Hector Berrios guided home three turf winners. Robert Hess Jr. saddled two claiming winners on the main track. Phil D’Amato saddled two turf route winners and Berrios rode both.
Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-17-24
Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks (1 1/8 miles turf): Iscreamuscream got out there and was controlling the tempo from the inside post. Hector Berrios was trying to back down the pace but Umberto Rispoli aboard Whiskey Decision made an early move and got clear at the six furlong mark. Berrios did not panic and let Rispoli aboard the favorite go. Iscreamuscream ($8.40) came again, put away Whiskey Decision, got clear, turned away Medoro, and scored by a length and a half. Medoro was clearly second best and Del Mar turf lover Zona Verde (IRE) landed the show at 11-1 odds. Buchu rallied from last to finish fourth and was followed by Sakura Blossom, a fading Whiskey Decision, Circle of Trust, and Sea Dancer. The final time was 1:48.06 and Phil D’Amato saddled the winner.
