Kyle Frey guided home two winners on turf. George Papaprodromou saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 9-6-24

I’m Smokin’ (CA-bred, 6f dirt): Morning line favorite R Heisman scratched in favor of the G1 Del Mar Futurity. Bodacious ($8.40) spurted clear early in this 5-horse contest and that was all she wrote. He won by 3 lengths over stalker Style Cat, and beaten favorite Shea Brennan had his head turned at the break and that cost him dearly. He chased the pace from the inside post and landed the show. The Gypsy Cowboy and Timty also ran. Tyler Baze rode the winner for Jorge Periban and the final time was 1:10.77.

September 6 Claims: Race 4 – Chasing Rain ($16k, Kelly Bainum). Race 5 – Kelly’s Out ($32k, Kelly Bainum). Race 6 – Cajun Brother ($12.5k, Jeff Mullins), I’m a Lucky Man ($12.5k, Sandino R. Del Mar Recap for Saturday (9-7-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt. On the turf course, a stalking favorite graduated in the 5f opener, a stalking favorite scored at one mile, stalking favorite Thought Process won the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf at one mile, a 27-1 closer tallied at one mile, 20-1 closer Hang the Moon won the John C. Mabee (G2) at 1 1/8 miles, and a 9-1 stalker earned her diploma in the 8.5f finale.

Kazushi Kimura booted home three winners. Two were on turf and two were graded victories (G1 Del Mar Debutante, G2 John C. Mabee). Antonio Fresu and Umberto Rispoli (dirt sprints). Phil D’Amato saddled three turf route winners including two stakes scores (Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf, G2 John C. Mabee). Ron Ellis saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 9-7-24

Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante (2yo fillies, 7f dirt): The pace was lively with 23-1 longshot Proud Starlet battling from the inside post with race favorite Nooni. Night Beacon also attended the pace and the three early runners were cooked. My top choice Vodka With a Twist made the first run and got clear by a length and a half, but Tenma ($8.00) was closing ground in the lane and got up in the nick of time to score by a nose. Vodka With a Twist ran too good to lose and finished 9 lengths clear of So There She Was and Jack’s Magic Girl. Nooni, Proud Starlet, and Night Beacon trailed. The final time was 1:23.67 and Kazushi Kimura rode the winner for Bob Baffert.

Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf (2yo fillies, 8T): Casalu got clear early but could not keep going. Strong favorite Thought Process ($2.80) dominated this race under Hector Berrios. She stalked from an inner post, struck the front, and won handily by 2 lengths. Supa Speed was fractious in the gate and was backed out and subsequently reloaded. She sat in midpack under Juan Hernandez and made a sustained rally to finish a clear second in a solid effort. Sea Runner stalked from the outside post and got past Casalu to complete the trifecta. The final time was 1:35.06 and Phil D’Amato saddled the winner.

Grade 2 John C. Mabee (fillies and mares, 9f turf): Closers dominated this race. Royal Charter (GB) made the running and Uncorked (AUS), Didia (ARG), and Fuente Ovejuna (GB) chased the pace, and none of those runners were around at the end. Hang the Moon ($43.00) made the best late run and got up to score by a half-length under Kazushi Kimura. Lucky Girl (IRE) just did grab the place by a head over Anisette (GB). The latter saved ground from the inside post and got a great inside run in the stretch, but she was outfinished and had to settle for the show. Phil D’Amato saddled the winner and she stopped the clock in 1:48.50.

September 7 Claims: Race 2 – Park City ($20k, Samuel Calvario). Race 10 – Red Flag ($40k, Mark Glatt).

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $780,403 and tickets with six winners paid $110,572.90. Tickets with five winners paid $578.20.

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (9-8-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 5.5f, 6.5f). On the turf course, a 4-1 closer graduated at 5f, a 7-2 stalker scored at 1 1/16 miles, a 5-1 stalker tallied at 5f, a midpack stalker won the G3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf at one mile, and a front running favorite ended the meet with a victory at 1 1/6 miles.

Juan Hernandez booted home three winners (2 turf). Umberto Rispoli guided home a pair.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 9-8-24

Grade 3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf (2yo, 8T): Mischief River and Show of Force dueled on the lead and that helped set the table for the patient runners. Artislas ($17.20) worked out the right stalking trip from the inside post and got the jump on the late runners and scored by a half-length. Sabertooth rallied from 13th to pick up the place by a neck over maiden Scipio. The latter was my top choice and he showed nice late energy to get up for the show by a nose over Mischief River. Reylu Gutierrez rode the winner for Jeff Mullins and the final time was 1:36.53.

Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity (2yo, 7f dirt): Getaway Car broke from the rail and got caught in a speed duel with longshot maiden Brother Tony. The former wasted too much early energy and had nothing left in the stretch. His stablemate Gaming ($9.80) was patiently handled under Flavien Prat, and he moved from 5th to 2nd, went right on by Getaway Car, and crossed the line 1 3/4 lengths in front of McKinzie Street. The latter was clearly second best in a solid effort and beaten favorite Citizen Bull rallied wide for the show. Getaway Car weakened to fourth and was followed by R Heisman, Rank, and a very tired Brother Tony. The final time was 1:23.02.

September 8 Claims: Race 1 – Ace Ace Baby ($16k, Samuel Calvario), Beauty N the Bolt ($16k, John Sadler), Smile Baby Smile ($16k, Andy Mathis). Race 2 – Funkenstein ($16k, Sandino R. Hernandez Jr.), It’s My House ($16k, Sean Williams), Lord Sheldon ($16k, Anthony K. Saavedra). Mobou ($16k, Sandino R. Hernandez Jr.), Trusty Rusty ($16k, Samuel Calvario).

The $1 Pick 6 pool was $420,157 and nobody had all six winners. Tickets with five winners paid $15.269.70.
