Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (1-18-25)
Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners at six panels on dirt. On the turf course, an 11-1 outside presser graduated at 6f, a 1.70-1 stalker earned his diploma at 6f, 8-1 stalker Shocking Grey won the Sunshine Millions F&M Turf Sprint on the downhill course, midpack stalker Old Pal captured the Unusual Heat Turf Classic at 9f, and midpack stalker Take Another Card won the flat mile finale (Cal Cup Oaks).
Turf hat trick for Antonio Fresu (2 sprint wins). Simon Callaghan and Jeff Mullins (sprints) both saddled two winners.
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-18-25
Cal Cup Sprint (6f): Big City Lights was 10 cents on the dollar and he ran to his odds. He pressed from second, took the lead with two furlongs to go, and sped away to win by 7 3/4 lengths. Clovisconnection rallied from last to finish a clear second, and early leader Smiling Beast weakened to third. Haywood trailed. Flavien Prat rode the popular winner for Richard Mandella. Fractions: 22.13, 44.94, 57.15, 1:09.46.
Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint (6.5T): Stay and Scam was the even money favorite but she was no match for Shocking Grey ($19). The latter stalked outside, moved up, and kicked clear in the lane to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Stay and Scam worked out a nice tactical trip and secured the place by a half-length over Moment’s Pleasure (route/sprint). Elegant Sway, Safa, Andiamo Ragazza, Barbera, and Quantum Innergy also ran. Antonio Fresu rode the winner for Jeff Mullins. Fractions: 22.70, 45.32, 1:07.65, 1:13.42.
Unusual Heat Turf Classic (9T): Old Pal ($5.60) scored by a length as the favorite. He sat in midpack, moved up, and was best in the late going under Antonio Fresu. Coalinga Road closed from post 10 and got up for the place at 14-1 odds. My value top choice On the Whim was hard to settle early, and he stalked, led, and was outfinished late (missed place by a neck). Aligato was far back early under Prat and he ran on for fourth. Fast Buck, Barely Functional, None Above the Law, Jimmy Blue Jeans, We Can, Keep Movin’ On, and Takes Three completed the order of finish. Mark Glatt was the winning trainer. Fractions: 24.18, 47.42, 1:11.51, 1:36.09, 1:47.93.
Cal Cup Derby (8.5f): This one had a surprise result when all was said and done. 3-1 second choice Shea Brennan crossed the line first under Fresu but was disqualified and placed second for interfering with Whiskyginandbrandy ($42.20). The latter stalked the pace, missed by a neck, and had her number put up. Style Cat was third and my top choice R Heisman was bet down to favoritism and had an uncomfortable inside trip under Prat. Drop Um, Got’m Cot’m, I’m a Bad Boy, and Accidental Genius also ran. Tiago Pereira rode Whiskyginandbrandy for Steve Knapp. Fractions: 23.47, 48.28, 1:13.20, 1:39.69, 1:46.12.
Cal Cup Oaks (8T): The patient runners were the right ones to back. Second time starter Take Another Card ($5.80) stretched out, sat in midpack, and blasted off in the stretch to win by a neck over Miso Phansy. Tequilaansdtherapy closed from 12th to complete the trifecta. Less Is More made the running and weakened to fourth, and Chilly Philly, We the Hobby, Hey Jessie, Sunset Grazen, Muscial Number, In the Air Tonight, Pavel Is Appealing, and Big Soiree rounded out the order of finish. Grateful My Love scratched. Hector Berrios guided home the winner for Simon Callaghan. Fractions: 23.10, 47.96, 1:12.98, 1:24.96, 1:36.98.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $97,429 and nobody had six winners. In a rarity, there were no tickets with five winners either. The 4 out of 6 consolation prize was $437.20. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $52,051 when live racing resumes Sunday.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (1-19-25)
Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running winners on dirt. On the turf course, a 29-1 closer graduated in the 6f opener, a closing favorite earned her diploma at 6f, a 2-1 stalker tallied at 6f, a stalking favorite won at 6f, front running favorite Toupie won the Las Cienegas (G3) on the downhill course, and a 3-1 front runner held on by a nose in the flat mile MSW finale (rail at 10 feet).
Hat trick for Flavien Prat (2 turf sprints). Hector Berrios booted home a pair (sprints). Robert Hess Jr. saddled three winners (2 turf wins).
Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-19-25
Grade 3 La Canada (8.5f): This was a good battle between favorites Cavalieri and Alpha Bella. Chatalas had a short early lead and Cavalieri pressed outside, and Alpha Bella chased inside after bobbling at the start. Cavalieri put away Chatalas and Alpha Bella came after her in the stretch, but Bob Baffert’s even money favorite had something left, repelled the challenge, and won by a length and a half. Alpha Bella ran a quality race and was clearly second best. Big Hit stalked the pace and was best of the rest in third. Chatalas weakened to fourth and Che Evasora (CHI) and Musical Mischief (eased, walked off) also ran. Fractions: 23.69, 47.33, 1:11.35, 1:37.74, 1:44.15.
Grade 3 Las Cienegas (6.5T hillside): Hamwood Flier (IRE) scratched and she figured to set the pace. Post time favorite Toupie ($4.20) was happy with that development, and she went straight to the front under Flavien Prat and scored by 2 1/4 lengths. Anywho sat in midpack and won the battle for the place over Nadette (FR) and Miss Lizzy. Just Nails, Vitalera (CHI), Laulne (FR), and Ma Rae’s Girl also ran. Graham Motion saddled the winner. Fractions: 22.39, 44.72, 1:07.09, 1:12.97.
The $2 Pick 6 pool was $549,692 and tickets with six winners paid $1,251.00. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $31.00.
