Santa Anita Recap for Thursday (1-23-25)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (6f, 5.5f, 6f). On the turf course, a stalking favorite graduated in the flat mile opener, a front running favorite earned her diploma at one mile, a stalking/pressing favorite won on the downhill course, and a 9-2 stalker captured the flat mile finale (rail at 30 feet). 

Five wins for Juan Hernandez (3 dirt wins & 2 turf wins). Jeff Mullins saddled two sprint winners and Hernandez rode both. Mike Puype saddled two dirt winners and Hernandez rode both.  

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $62,229 and tickets with six winners paid $503.60. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $16.20. 

Jan. 23 Claims: Race 3 – Malibu Rocks ($40k, Rafael DeLeon). Race 9 – Schwarzmeier ($50k, Peter Eurton).

On the turf course, a stalking favorite graduated in the flat mile opener, a stalking favorite earned her diploma at 9f, a 36-1 closer won at 9f, a 1.80-1 stalker scored at one mile, and a 6-1 closer broke her maiden in the 6f finale (rail at 20 feet). 

Turf hat trick for Hector Berrios (2 routes). Main track riding triple for Edwin Maldonado (2 sprints).   

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $61,779 and tickets with six winners paid $33,004.60. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $76.40.

Santa Anita Recap for Saturday (1-25-25)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Four front running winner on dirt (6f, 6.5f, 6.5f, 6f). On the turf course, a 1.60-1 stalker graduated in the 6.5f opener, a 10-1 closer got up late at 6f, a 7-2 stalker tallied at 6f, and a 7-1 closer won the 9f finale (rail at 10 feet). 

Tiago Pereira guided home two route winners. 

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-25-25 

Grade 2 San Pasqual (1 1/8 miles dirt): The pace was lively with Midnight Mammoth, Tarantino, and post time favorite Imagination mixing it up early. They softened each other up, and my value top choice Katonah ($13.40) went last-to-first under Tiago Pereira. The winning margin was 2 lengths and Express Train stalked the pace and landed the place. Tarantino edged Imagination by a nose for the show. American Admiral and Midnight Mammoth were next, and Dont Fight the Fed was injured and transported off the track via equine ambulance. Doug O’Neill saddled the winner. Fractions: 22.10, 45.84, 1:10.71, 1:37.77, 1:51.36.  

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $66,494 and there were no tickets with six winners. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $1,008.20. There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $35,524 when live racing resumes Sunday.

Santa Anita Recap for Sunday (1-26-25)

Conditions started out fast and firm turf. The main track was downgraded to wet fast (sealed) after the fourth race, and races 6, 8, and 10 were moved to dirt.  Three front running winners on dirt (6f, 6.5f, 8f). 

Kyle Frey (sprints) and Flavien Prat both guided home two winners. Tim McCanna saddled two winners.  

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-26-25 

Clocker’s Corner (6f dirt): This race was moved to dirt and four horses scratched. Three runners broke from the gate and Mbagnick (CHI) made the lead from the inside post under Kent Desormeaux. Vlahos ($3.80) was the favorite and he pressed the pace and gradually wore down Mbagnick to win by a length and a quarter. Hamwood Flier (IRE) trailed throughout, eased, and walked off. Antonio Fresu rode the winner for Doug O’Neill. Fractions: 21.77, 44.44, 57.20, 1:10.18.   

The $2 Pick 6 pool was $178,465 and tickets with six winners paid $1,422.20. The 5 out of 6 consolation prize was $20.00.
