February 16 Picks:

SA 1 (Mcl-50k, 6T)
Primary – #2 MAX N’ LOU, #5 Dirty Words
Secondary – #3 Lord Dunmore, #4 Targaryis

Wagers: #2 to win, Exacta 2/3-5, Exacta 3-5/2, Trifecta 2-5/2-3-4-5/2-3-4-5

Comments: #2 Max n’ Lou (9-2) turns back in his third start after a layoff and he might show more in his second start at the $50k level. Berrios is his new rider and he is 2-for-6 with Puype recently. #5 Dirty Words (5-2) was 11-1 in his MSW bow at 5T and he finished an even 6th of 11, and the runner-up was a next-out winner. Fresu stays put and he adds lasix and might show more on the drop second time out. #3 Lord Dunmore (3-1) attended the pace and weakened in all three MSW turf sprints. His new rider Ayuso shows a profit on turf and he is 1-for-4 with Sadler. #4 Targaryis (7-2) added lasix, dropped into a Mcl-32k dirt sprint, and set a pressured pace and was clearly second best. Mendez is 1-for-22 with his first grass starters.

SA 2 (Str-OC-50k, 6f)
Primary – #2 JERRY’S SPIRIT, #5 Zombo Bombo
Secondary – #1 Handsome Ticket, #4 Mr. Disrespectful

Wagers: #2 to win, Exacta box 2-5, Trifecta key 2/1-4-5

50 cent Early Pick 4 (races 2-5): 2/1-2-3-4-6/1-2-5-6-7/4-6 ($25)
50 cent Early Pick 4 (races 2-5): 1-2-4-5/4-6/6-7/4-6 ($16)

Comments: #2 Jerry’s Spirit (8-5) ran into sharp rivals Lonesome Stew and Bartholdy in his last two starts. He was best of the rest at LRC when last seen Dec. 6. Pederson is 6-for-13 at SA and his winning rider Aguilar strings along. #5 Zombo Bombo (5-2) makes his first start since January 2024 and this is his first start as a gelding. He was nowhere at 34-1 odds in his MSW bow, and dropped into a Mcl-32k sprint and aired second time out (show finisher next-out winner). He dueled and was clearly second best in his last start and the show finisher was a next-out winner. Papaprodromou shows a profit with this type of layoff runner and his winning rider Herrera is 3-for-7 with this barn recently. He drilled a local 3f gate bullet for this Feb. 11. #1 Handsome Ticket (3-1) returns to dirt in his second start after a layoff. He dueled and graduated by 5 lengths in a Mcl-50k sprint at LRC second time out (December 2023), and that was his lone dirt outing. #4 Mr. Disrespectful (5-1) ran well in 3 of 5 sprints on fast dirt. He earned competitive numbers on three occasions and should be forwardly placed.

SA 3 (Str-Alw-50k, 6T)
Primary – #4 ACTIVATED. #6 Long Mayshe Reign
Secondary – #2 Gem Mine, #1 Headed for Om, #3 Ms McWhinney

Wagers: #4 to win, Trifecta 4-6/2-4-6/1-2-3-4-6

Comments: #4 Activated (7-2) shipped to this country and got up by a neck at 5T Nov. 17, and the runner-up was a next-out winner. Rispoli stays put and this filly won at this distance in GB in 2023. #6 Long Mayshe Reign (2-1) has been in good form since finishing a neck behind Activated in November. She wired the field at this course/distance Dec. 27, and set the pace and was second best as the beaten chalk in a similar local 6T affair Jan. 20. #2 Gem Mine (3-1) dropped into a $32k/2L sprint and won as the favorite under Prat at 6.5T Jan. 16. This is her second start after a layoff and Prat is 4-for-4 with Baltas recently. #1 Headed for Om (4-1) makes her first start since August 2024 and Sadler has good stats with this type of layoff runner. She reunites with Berrios and he guided this one home at this course/distance last May. #3 Ms McWhinney (5-1) won her first two starts after the O’Neill claim. She went to the sidelines for 7+ months and returned with an even 4th of 7 Jan. 20. She needs pace help and might move up second after a layoff.

SA 4 (Clm-5k, 6f) – SA Price Play
Primary – #6 POINT AND SHOOT, #7 Morning Addiction
Secondary – #5 Madame Gazelle, #1 Broadway Tiger, #2 Greatful Attitude

Wagers: #6 to win, Exacta box 6-7, Trifecta 6-7/1-2-5-6-7/1-2-5-6-7

50 cent Middle Pick 4 (races 4-7): 1-2-5-6-7/1-4-5-6/4-5-6-7-8/2 ($50)

Comments: #6 Point and Shoot (10-1) won an all-weather sprint at GG last March and a dirt route at SR last summer. Orozco is 4-for-11 with Ruby Thomas and she might be worth considering at a price. #7 Morning Addiction (2-1) is 10-for-35 overall and she has struck at SA before. She won a $12.5k claimer at Fresno Sept. 15, was second after setting the pace in a starter allowance dirt route at PLN Nov. 1, and turned back and won as the favorite at PLN Nov. 30. She pressed and weakened to 4th of 7th Jan. 1, and Jubilant Joanie won that race by 8+ lengths at 10 cents on the dollar. She was an okay 4th of 6 in a local $10k sprint Jan. 19. #5 Madame Gazelle (6-1) is a 7-for-23 mare exiting a $4k sprint win at PLN. She is 6-for-13 in dirt sprints and might not be out of this. #1 Broadway Tiger (5-2) drops in class in search of past success, and if she is ever going to rediscover sharp form, this might be the day. She won a $20k claimer at PLN last October and has not done much in three starts since. #2 Greatful Attitude (3-1) was a close third in an $8k sprint at PLN Dec. 8, and was 6th of 8 from the inside post in a local $5k sprint Jan. 20.

SA 5 (Alw-67k, 5T)
Primary – #4 UNCONQUERABLE KEEN, #6 Sorrento Sky
Secondary – #5 Turn On the Jets, #1 Tigerhon

Wagers: #4 to win, Exacta box 4-6, Trifecta 4-6/1-4-5-6/1-4-5-6

$2 Pick 6 Ticket (Races 5-10): 4-6/4-6/2/6/5-6/4-7 ($32)

Comments: #4 Unconquerable Keen (3-1) had trouble and eased in the G2 Joe Hernandez at 6.5T Dec. 28. The 2-time local winner is 4-for-8 at this distance and his winning rider Rispoli keeps the faith. #6 Sorrento Sky (5-2) chased and scored at 5T in September, and won again at 6.5T in October. He stalked, led, and missed by a half-length in the Stormy Liberal at 5T as the beaten favorite Dec. 1. He reconnects with his winning rider Fresu and he runs well fresh. #5 Turn On the Jets (4-1) owns three wins at this distance including one on 8-4-23. Since that win, he has dropped eight straight. Prat is 3-for-5 with D’Amato recently. He is 0-for-7 with five minor awards at SA. #1 Tigerhon (5-1) was part of the trifecta in 8 of his last 10 starts and he won three of those races. He sports three wins at this distance and Dettori is his new pilot as Rispoli opted to ride Unconquerable Keen.

SA 6 (Clm-5k/2L, 5.5f)
Primary – #4 GETEMDUSTY, #6 One Big Smile
Secondary – #5 Not My Rodeo, #7 Shaun’s Jazz, #8 Lurking Fear

Wagers: #4 to win, Exacta 4-6/4-5-6, Trifecta 4-6/4-5-6-7-8/5-8

Comments: #4 Getemdusty (3-1) settled for minor awards in four straight maiden claiming starts, and he got over the hump in a sharp local Mcl-8k win Jan. 16. The 1-for-14 gelding is fast enough to take this. #6 One Big Smile (5-2) looked good graduating at PLN Nov. 30 and landed the place in a similar local sprint Jan. 23. #5 Not My Rodeo (7-2) completed the trifecta in his last three sprints. His numbers are thereabouts and he fits with these. #7 Shaun’s Jazz (8-1) exits a show finish in a $10k/2L route. He earned a competitive number last time and we will find out if he can sprint. #8 Lurking Fear (9-2) turns back and removes blinkers. He finished 3rd the last two times he sprinted.

SA 7 (Mcl-50k, 6.5T)
Primary – #2 FEEL THE MAGIC, #1 Crazy Cavalier
Secondary – #4 Sand Bagger, #6 Black as My Heart

Wagers: Exacta 1-2/4, Trifecta key 2/1-4-6, Superfecta 1-2/1-2/4-6/4-6

50 cent Late Pick 4 (races 7-10): 2/6/2-3-4-5-6/1-2-4-5-6-7 ($15)
50 cent Late Pick 4 (races 7-10): 1-2-4-6/6/5/1-2-4-5-6-7 ($12)
50 cent Late Pick 4 (races 7-10): 1-2-4-6/6/2-3-4-5-6/7 ($10)
50 cent Late Pick 4 (races 7-10): 1-2/4-6/5-6/4-7 ($8)

$3 Turf Pick 3 (races 7, 9, 10): 2/5/1-2-4-5-6-7 ($18)
$3 Turf Pick 3 (races 7, 9, 10): 2/2-3-4-5-6/7 ($15)
$3 Turf Pick 3 (races 7, 9, 10): 1-2-4-6/5/7 ($12)

Comments: #2 Feel the Magic (7-5) was dusted as the beaten favorite when last seen in a dirt route (June 2024). The first time gelding adds blinkers, turns back and switches to turf, and Prat takes the call. He landed the place in two dirt sprints last year. #1 Crazy Cavalier (5-2) completed the exacta in his last three turf sprints. O’Neill claimed him for $50k in November and he landed the place for his new connections Jan. 20. Fresu knows him now and an inside stalking trip is expected. #4 Sand Bagger (6-1) was less than a length behind Crazy Cavalier last time. That was his first try at this level and the second time he landed the show. #6 Black as My Heart (15-1) finished an improved third in a turf route last September and that was his first start as a gelding. He had a troubled trip and finished last of 11 Dec. 28. He turns back and can be competitive in this spot if he runs back to his Sept. 5 number.

SA 8 (Clm-8k, 6f)
Primary – #6 ICY MISCHIEF
Secondary – #4 Happy Chappy, #7 Respect the Crown, #5 Spread the Risk
Wagers: #6 to win, Exacta box 4-6, Trifecta key 6/4-5-7

$3 Late Pick 3 (races 8-10): 6/5/1-2-4-5-6-7 ($18)
$3 Late Pick 3 (races 8-10): 6/2-3-4-5-6/7 ($15)
$3 Late Pick 3 (races 8-10): 4-5-6-7/5/7 ($12)

Comments: #6 Icy Mischief (2-1) exits a close runner-up finish in a similar local dirt sprint. She should attend the pace and can win this if she runs two alike. #4 Happy Chappy(9-2) won a $10k/2L sprint at PLN Dec. 6, and was 5th of 8 in the same race Icy Mischief exits. #7 Respect the Crown (6-1) exits a runner-up finish in a $3.5k affair at Los Al and Uranga claimed her that day. She has won at this course and distance before. #5 Spread the Risk (5-1) was third in the common Jan. 20 sprint.

SA 9 (Baffle, 6.5T hillside) – SA Best Bet
Primary – #5 SCIPIO, #6 Freedom’s Not Free
Secondary – #2 Triple Diamonds, #4 Fomo Joe, #3 Style Cat

Wagers: #5 to win, Exacta box 5-6, Superfecta key 5/2-3-4-6

$5 Late Double (races 9-10): 5-6/4-6-7 ($30)

Comments: #5 Scipio (5-2) competed in three stakes races as a maiden and was 3rd (G3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf), 4th (Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance), and 2nd (G3 Cecil B. DeMille). He returned to the maiden ranks and chased from second and graduated by a length as the favorite Dec. 28. He turns back, removes blinkers, and Prat stays put. He was third in his 5T bow and raced at one mile in all four starts since. Baltas has good stats with his turf sprint starters, and milers trying the downhill course can be dangerous. #6 Freedom’s Not Free (7-2) turned back, removed blinkers, switched surfaces, and looked good graduating at 6T Jan. 5. Dettori stays put and Glatt is a quality turf sprint trainer. #2 Triple Diamonds (3-1) won his 5T bow and clicked right back at 6T second time out, and those were state bred races. Rispoli got acquainted with him last time and he is 7-for-17 with Glatt. #4 Fomo Joe (10-1) won his 5T bow and stretched out and was a close second in the Eddie Logan at 8T Dec. 29. I like the Escobedo/Hanson team and he might outrun his odds. #3 Style Cat (4-1) won his lone turf try at 5T Dec. 1. Berrios is a sharp turf rider and he can get a piece of this.

SA 10 (MSW, 9T) – SA Best Bet
Primary – #7 CALMATE, #4 Inner Fury
Secondary – #6 Pure Vida Princesa, #2 Lila, #5 Dandy Vandy, #1 Footnote

Wagers: #7 to win, Trifecta 4-7/2-4-6-7/1-2-4-5-6-7

Comments: #7 Calmate (9-2) rallied to finish a distant second behind subsequent stakes winner Silent Law in her dirt sprint bow. She raced wide and ran last of 6 in a dirt sprint second time out, and stretched out, moved to turf, and was 6th of 11 from post 10 as a 68-1 longshot at 8T Dec. 26. McCarthy showed a profit with the blinkers on move and Prat jumped aboard Jan. 20, and she stalked and finished a troubled 4th of 10 (first lasix). She can compete with these if she runs a but faster and gets a better trip. #4 Inner Fury (7-2) was 4th of 14 in her 7T bow in Ireland. D’Amato has her now and Rispoli takes the call. #6 Pure Vida Princesa (3-1) switched to turf and earned a decent number in a nose defeat as the favorite at 5T Nov. 16 (stalked from post 11). She added lasix and stretched out Jan. 20, and she set the pace and held the show. Dam has tossed a turf winner and Fresu stays put. Her dam Betyar won three routes (1 on turf). #2 Lila (4-1) split a 12-horse field in her 8T bow at 7-2 odds. She added blinkers and lasix second time out and went off at 24-1, and she chased from second and ended up a neck in front of Pure Vida Princesa. #5 Dandy Vandy (5-1) stretched out and finished 3rd in a MSW turf route second time out, and was last seen finishing 7th of 11 in the G3 Jimmy Durante. She is back in a maiden race and Dettori takes the call. #1 Footnote (12-1) was 74-1 in her 8T bow and she rallied to finish third. She was 12-1 in the common Jan. 20 affair and did not have the best trip when finishing 8th of 10. Quinonez is a profitable, low profile trainer and sharp turf rider Berrios got to know her last time.

BONUS STAKES FROM SUNLAND PARK

SUN 7 (Sunland Park Oaks, 8f)
Primary – #4 MAYSAM
Secondary – #2 Runnin N Gunnin, #5 Enchanting

Wagers: #4 to win, Exacta 4-2, Trifecta key 4/2-5

Comments: #4 Maysam (9-5) pressed from the inside post and rolled to a big dirt sprint maiden win as the 1-2 favorite at SA Jan. 24. Baffert is strong with his first route starters and the $500k Game Winner filly is fast enough to win this based on her debut number. #2 Runnin N Gunnin (3-1) added lasix and stalked and easily scored as the favorite in a flat mile allowance race at HOU Jan. 19. Asmussen’s $250k Gun Runner filly is getting faster. #5 Enchanting (7-2) split an 8-horse field as the 3-2 favorite in her flat mile bow at RP last fall. She turned back and was much improved in an easy 3-length victory at 80 cents on the dollar in a 6.5f MSW affair at HOU Jan. 19, and clear show finisher She’s a Dreamer was a next-out AR-bred MSW dirt sprint winner at OP Feb. 2. Dam Happy Mesa won two stakes races on turf (Selima, Hilltop). #1 Rogue Justice (10-1) is a maiden after three starts. She improved her numbers in all three starts and rallied to finish a clear 2nd Jan. 17. She drilled a local 6f bullet for this Feb. 8. #3 Pink Pacific (9-2) is 2-for-4 in dirt sprints and both wins were at 5.5f. The Improbable filly drilled a local half-mile bullet for this Feb. 6 and should impact the pace. #7 Stubby (10-1) is 0-for-8 with four minor awards. She was 3rd in the Zia Princess and 7th of 8 in the Borderplex. #6 Street Colors (15-1) is a maiden after five starts. She set the pace and weakened to 3rd at 5.5f Jan. 3 (first lasix), and was a distant last of 8 in the Borderplex at 6.5f Jan. 17. She is overmatched.

SUN 9 (Sunland Park Derby, 8.5f)
Primary – #4 GETAWAY CAR
Secondary – #9 Caldera, #8 Touchy
Wagers: #4 to win, Exacta 4-9, Trifecta key 4/8-9

Comments: #4 Getaway Car (9-5) is the class of the field. He wired the field in his first two dirt sprints including the G3 Best Pal. He dueled and weakened to 4th in the G1 Del Mar Futurity, and was clearly second best behind Citizen Bull in the G1 American Pharaoh. He stalked the pace and missed the show by a neck in the G1 BC Juvenile. Last time, he set the pace and was second best behind Journalism in the G2 Los Al Futurity. Baffert’s $700k Curlin colt should make his presence felt from the outset and could easily take this as the favorite for Hernandez/Baffert. #9 Caldera (5-1) owns an ascending numbers pattern for Wayne Lukas. He stretched out and landed the place Dec. 13, and added blinkers and lasix and rolled to an easy front running maiden win as the favorite Jan. 17. The $500k Liam’s Map colt drilled a 5f bullet for this Feb. 2. #8 Touchy (7-2) was the favorite in back-ro-back stakes races to begin his career, and he was 2nd in the Tremont. He dropped into a MSW affair and easily beat next-out winner Mo Quality at KEE in October. He was the favorite in the Turfway Prevue at 6.6f Jan. 4 and he rallied to finish a clear 2nd. Rosario strings along and he stretches out, returns to dirt, and needs to run faster. #6 Take Charge Tom (8-1) won all three starts and is getting faster for Diodoro. He won his first two sprint starts as the favorite at Turf Paradise including the Lost in the Fog. He stretched out, pressed the pace, and won the Riley Allison Derby by a length Jan. 17. #7 McKinzie Street (4-1) moves to the Justin Evans barn. He raced five times in SoCal and was part of the trifecta four times (3 stakes placings). He fired a 5f Turf Paradise bullet for this Feb 4 and should be forwardly placed under Vazquez. #3 Smash It (12-1) was part of the trifecta in 7 of 8 starts. The LA-bred gelding won the Zia Park Juvenile Nov. 26, and he dueled and was a clear 3rd of 10 in the Riley Allison Derby last time. #2 Remember Big Jim is an improving maiden. He was clearly second best as the favorite in a 6f MSW race Dec. 4, and stretched out and rallied from 14-lengths back to finish 2nd by a length as a 30-1 longshot in the Riley Allison Derby. He drilled a local 5f bullet for this Feb. 8 and will try to get involved in the stretch. #1 Itsmybirthday won his first two dirt sprints at Turf Paradise by a combined 14 1/4 lengths. He stretches out after two sprints and should be all over the pace from the inside post. #5 Spenard exits a romping dirt sprint maiden win as the favorite. He stretches out and should be forwardly placed in his third start after a layoff.
