The Virginia Oaks was the latest Kentucky Oaks 2025 prep race and second time starter Fondly picked up 50 points at Colonial Downs for trainer Graham Motion. In this report, I will recap that event, update the Oaks points standings, and share my latest top five Oaks contenders.
The Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks and Bourbonette Oaks are the next two Kentucky Oaks points races on March 22.
FG Oaks field: 1 – Girl Math, 2 – Gowells Delight, 3 – Ahavah, 4 – Jenkin, 5 – Her Laugh, 6 – Bless the Broken, 7 – Good Cheer, 8 – Secret Faith, 9 – Quickick
Bourbonette Oaks field: 1 – Resolve, 2 – Somethinabouther, 3 – Admit, 4 – Zealous Moon, 5 – Bless the Broken, 6 – Getting After It, 7 – As Catch Can, 8 – Golden Sunshine, 9 – Fixin to Bee, 10 – Just Ruthless, 11 – White Rocks, 12 – Will Then, 13 – Bracelet (AE), 14 – Classic Appeal (AE)
In other Oaks news, Pretty Sassy has not had a published workout since March 6 and drops out of the top five. She won her last two dirt routes at Fair Grounds but has yet to run in a points race and is running out of time to make the big race.
I am covering all of the road to Kentucky Oaks prep races on my Runaway Horse YouTube Channel, and through the first 25 points races, my top choices have 10 wins, 4 runner-up finishes, and 3 show finishes. Two of my top choices scratched, so I am officially 10-for-23 on the road to the Oaks.
Kentucky Oaks 2025 Points Race Recaps
Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs (3-15-25): Girl Math and Gowells Delight scratched and that left a field of 6. Fondly was the favorite from the outside post and she battled on the pace with Anonima. My top choice You’ll Be Back stalked from third but came up empty. Fondly was determined and gradually put away a stubborn Anonima, and she held off a late bid from Early On to win by a half-length. Early On closed nicely in the stretch under Irad Ortiz, Jr. to secure the place, and Anonima was another half-length back in third. Icona Mama was an even fourth, You’ll Be Back weakened to fifth and Low Key was last throughout and was taken off the track via equine ambulance. Fractions: 23.49, 46.58, 1:10.59, 1:35.78, 1:42.51.

Jarrod Horak’s Fabulous Five Kentucky Oaks 2025 Contenders (3-16-25)
#1 – Muhimma (Munnings – Princess Carolina, by Tapit) – Trainer: Brad Cox – Last Ranking (1)
Comments: Everything is riding on her next start in the Ashland (G1) at Keeneland on April 4. She was a perfect 3-for-3 in 2024 and chased the pace and finished a disappointing third as the beaten favorite in the Honeybee (G3) on Feb. 23. She breezed a half-mile in 49.20 (47/110) at Fair Grounds on March 7, and posted an identical half-mile time at that same venue on March 14 (48th best of 114).
#2 – Good Cheer (Medaglia d’Oro – Wedding Toast, by Street Sense) – Trainer: Brad Cox – Last Ranking (2)
Comments: She won all five career starts including three straight Oaks points race victories. The facile Rachel Alexandra (G2) winner has breezed three times since that race including a 5f move in 1:01.20 (11/41) at Fair Grounds on March 15. She is entered in the Grade 2 FG Oaks on March 22 and is the solid favorite to win that event.
#3 – Ballerina d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro – In the Moonlight, by Tapit) – Trainer: Chad Brown – Last Ranking (3)
Comments: I am expecting her to move forward around two turns next time. She got sick and missed the Rachel Alexandra (G2), and just missed the place in a useful prep in the Davona Dale (G2) at one mile (one turn) in her first start this year on March 1. She got back to work with a half-mile breeze in 49.80 (21/60) at Payson Park on March 15.
#4 – Tenma (Nyquist – Amagansett, by Tapit) – Trainer: Bob Baffert – Last Ranking (4)
Comments: The 3-time graded winner captured her last two dirt routes in the Starlet (G2) and Las Virgenes (G3). She has worked four times since her last, most recently logging 5f in 1:01.20 (51/87) at Santa Anita on March 9. The SA Oaks (G2) on April 5 is next.
# 5 Quietside (Malibu Moon – Benner Island, by Speightstown) Trainer: John Ortiz – Last Ranking (6)
Comments: This consistent filly moves into the top five. She graduated in her bow and hit the board in the G1 Spinaway (2nd), G1 Alcibiades (3rd), G2 Golden Rod (2nd), and listed Martha Washington (2nd). She broke through with her first stakes win in the Honeybee (G3) on Feb. 23, and she pressed from an outer post and won that heat by a length. She breezed twice at Oaklawn since her last and drilled a 5f bullet in 59.60 (1/26) on March 16. She galloped out 6f in 1:12 and 7f in 1:26.80, and will have a maintenance move next week as she gears up for the Fantasy (G2) on March 29.
Next Nine: (6) La Cara, (7) Five G, (8) The Queens M G, (9) Drexel Hill, (10) Fondly, (11) Her Laugh, (12) Simply Joking, (13) Running Away, (14) Quickick
