#9 Dr Ruben M (4-1) turned back, switched surfaces, dropped into a $50k claimer, and stalked below par fractions and scored by 4 3/4 lengths at this distance at Ellis Park Aug. 15. His new rider Antonio Fresu is 5-for-16 with Doug O’Neill and he exceeded the winning par for this last time.
#1 Sculcos Folly (5-2) is a New York-bred sophomore colt and he is 6-for-10 with a pair of runner-up finishes and a show finish. He won four straight races from January through June including a trio of state bred stakes scores. He stretched out, battled on the pace, and was clearly second best as the beaten favorite in the New York Derby at 1 1/16 miles July 13, and he turned back, set a pressured pace, and ended up a close third as the beaten chalk Aug. 29. He romped in his lone try at this distance and figures to attend the pace from the inside post under his new rider John Velazquez.
#3 Mo the Merrier (10-1) improved his numbers in all four maiden starts. He dropped from MSW to Mcl-85k and graduated by 4 3/4 lengths at SAR Aug. 13 and his new trainer Michael Miceli is 18% first after the claim. Dylan Davis hops aboard the sophomore son of Uncle Mo, and he owns running style versatility.
#4 Shoot the Nickel (10-1) was part of the exacta in five of six starts at this distance. He exits a late running win at this trip, and his new rider Ricardo Santana, Jr. is 3-for-15 with Linda Rice.
