Echo Eddie (CA-bred, 6.5f): Fionello ($39.80) made a dramatic last-to-first run to get up in the nick of time. Thirsty Rebel was 2 lengths in front in the stretch and lost a tough one, and it was another neck back to Galloping Ghost in third. Tommy Norris (4th), Southern Melodee (5th), and even money favorite Sammy Davis (6th) also ran. Antonio Fresu rode the winner for Steve Knapp. Fractions: 22.05, 44.43, 1:09.70, 1:16.70.
Grade 2 SA Oaks (8.5f): A pair of stablemates dominated this Oaks prep. Grade 1 SA Derby (9f): The race flow was turned upside down when Cherokee Nation lost his footing at the start from the inside post. With the inside speed out of the pace picture, his stablemate Potente dueled with Robusta, and the favorite put the latter away. A fresh challenge came from outside stalker So Happy and the race was on. Potente dug in but So Happy ($16.60) had the best late energy and won by 2 3/4 lengths.
