Comments: #1 United (8-5) is classy and versatile and almost always runs his race on turf, and he handles any distance. He captured all three graded turf routes this year and showed nice tactical speed each time. If the pace gets hot he can sit back and make a late run, and that kind of versatility makes him dangerous just about every time he starts. He is a neck away from a 3-for-3 local turf record, and his regular pilot Prat strings along. #6 Proud Pedro (12-1) overcame a slow pace to smartly win an optional claimer at this course and distance July 24. The 4yo colt has always been held in high regard and may have found his calling in these long distance turf races. #5 Ward ’n Jerry (10-1) was out in front but did not have enough stamina to win the San Juan Capistrano (G3) at a mile and six furlongs June 21. His best recent races were at 11 or 12 furlongs, and Smith hops aboard the versatile 2-time local winner. #7 Red King (8-1) exits an easy victory in the San Juan Capistrano (G3). He just had more stamina than his rivals that day. He is 0-for-8 at DMR (6 minor awards) and 0-for-6 at this distance (4 minor awards), and hitting the board under Rispoli is a likely outcome.
