Del Mar Recap for Friday (8-19-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. No front running winners on dirt. On the turf course, a front runner won the 5f opener, a 7-1 front runner wired the field at 8f, a stalking favorite graduated at 8f, and early moving patient runner Sister Otoole captured the CTT & TOC Stakes at 11f (rail at 30 feet).

Abel Cedillo booted home a pair.

CTT & TOC (11T): Macadamia got out there and tried to slow things down and steal it, but Umberto Rispoli sensed the slow splits and made a wide, early move aboard Sister Otoole ($11.00). That was the winning move and she prevailed by a half-length over late mover Scarabea. Bellamore stalked, led, and held 3rd by a neck over Macadamia (BRZ). Neige Blanche (FR) disappointed as the beaten chalk and was followed by Duvet Day (IRE), Freedom Lass, and Almost a Factor. The final time was 2:15.27.

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (8-20-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 5,5f). On the turf course, a last-to-first closer broker her maiden at 6-1 odds at 8f, a 7-2 stalker scored at one mile, a closing favorite won at 8f, stalking favorite Spenderella powered away in the Del Mar Oaks (G1) at 9f, and a 12-1 outside pace presser graduated in the 8.5f finale.

Joe Bravo booted home two turf route winners, and Abel Cedillo guided home a pair of dirt sprint winners. Phil D’Amato and Jonathan Wong (dirt sprints) both saddled two winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-20-22

Del Mar Oaks (G1): A baker’s dozen broke from the gate and Spenderella ($4.40) could not have been more impressive. She got into a great stalking spot from post 10, and she burst to the front and pulled well clear to score by 4-1/2 lengths for Gaffalione/Motion. My top choice Bellabel (IRE) sat a perfect inside stalking trip but could not go with the winner in the stretch. She was clearly second best under Rispoli. It was a real scramble for the show with forwardly placed runner Cairo Memories holding off Tezzaray (GB) and Ballet Dancing. The final time for 9f on turf was 1:47.09.

August 20 Claims: Race 3 – Tapit Doux ($25k, Steve Knapp). Race 9 – Dr. Troutman ($12.5k, Jonathan Wong), Hapi Hapi ($12.5k, Jonathan Wong), High Heater ($12.5k, Bob Hess Jr.), Little Demon ($12.5k, Salvador Orozco), Of Good Report ($12.5k, Lorenzo Ruiz).

Del Mar Recap for Sunday (8-21-22)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (6f, 6.5f). On the turf course, a midpack stalker scored as the favorite at 8f, an outside stalker struck at 5-1 odds at one mile, an inside stalker tipped out and edged the chalk in the Solana Beach at 8f, and a closing favorite ended the day with a sharp optional claiming win at one mile.

Leading rider Juan Hernandez booted home four winners. Two were in dirt sprints and the other two were turf routes. Umberto Rispoli (turf routes) and Drayden Van Dyke both guided home two winners. John Sadler saddled two dirt sprint winners.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-21-22

Solana Beach Stakes (CA-bred, 8T): Harper’s Gallop opened up early from the rail and tried to steal this one, but the 12-1 longshot could not keep it going and weakened in the stretch. Warrens Candy Girl ($12.20) was fresh off a local turf route win a week earlier, and Craig Lewis had her primed to run another big one. She stalked inside, moved out and came after post time favorite Eddie’s New Dream, and surged late to win by a head. The even money chalk was clearly second best and 18-1 Barrister’s Ride edged 18-1 Pulpit Rider for the show. Harper’s Gallop was next, followed by Sassyserb, Rose Dawson, and All Dialed In. The final time was 1:35.23.

August 21 Claims: Race 1 – Big Jolt ($20k, Victor Trujillo), Gypsy Lynn ($20k, George Papaprodromou), Shemakescents ($20k, Jorge Periban).
