Del Mar Recap for Thursday (8-22-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Three front running winners on dirt (5.5f, 5.5f, 8f). On the turf course, a last-to-first closing favorite scored at 5f, a front running favorite tallied at 5f, a stalking favorited tallied at 1 3/8 miles, and a 5-2 stalker won the flat mile finale (rail at 24 feet). 

Antonio Fresu and Phil D’Amato teamed up for two turf route wins.

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running sprint winner at 6f on dirt. On the turf course, a front running favorite won at one mile, a 4-1 stalker graduated at 5f, a 7-2 closer graduated at 5f, and a 7-2 closing favorite won the 8.5f finale (rail at 24 feet). 

Edwin Maldonado booted home a pair of dirt sprint winners. Peter Miller saddled three turf winners including a pair at 5T. 

August 24 Claims: Race 1 – Always On Cay ($25k, Steve Knapp), Haywood ($25k, Doug O’Neill). Race 2 – Castle Leoch (50k, Mark Glatt). Race 8 – Big Mama Sue ($25k, Steve Miyadi).

Del Mar Recap for Saturday (8-24-24)

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (8f, 6.5f, 7f). The other two dirt winners pressed the pace. On the turf course, a stalking favorite won at 8.5f, an 8-1 stalker graduated at one mile, a 7-2 closer scored at 5f, a 7-2 presser tallied at 5f, and a 7-2 stalker graduated in the 8.5f finale (rail at 12 feet). 

Antonio Fresu guided home three winners on dirt. Juan Hernandez booted home a pair. Leonard Powell saddled two turf route winners. Doug O’Neill saddled two sprint winners.  

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-24-24 

Grade 2 Pat O’Brien (7f): Raging Torrent set a pressure pace and heavy favorite The Chosen Vron pressed outside and got into a battle with his sophomore foe. Those two traded the lead in the stretch and Raging Torrent ($10.80) dug in, came back, and prevailed by a neck. The Chosen Vron was clearly second best and Big City Lights rallied to finish a clear third, Senor Buscador rallied mildly for fourth in his needed return at a distance too short for him. Happy Jack, See Through It, Moose Mitchell, and Arrowthegreat also ran. The final time was 1:21.17 and Doug O’Neill saddled the sophomore winner. 

August 24 Claims: Race 3 – Baladi ($35k, Craig Dollase), Redline ($40k, Doug O’Neill), Tahoe Sunrise ($40k, Sam Wilensky). Race 5 – Asian Monarch ($20k, Ed Moger Jr). Race 6 – Invincible ($50k, Dean Pederson), Island Cruiser ($50k, Doug O’Neill), Mission Beach ($50k, Leonard Powell). Race 7 – Winter Snow ($50k, Jeff Mullins).

Fast main track and firm turf course. Two front running sprint winners on dirt (5.5f, 6,5f). On the turf course, a 6-1 front runner graduated at 5f, a 10-1 closer scored at 5f, a 9-2 stalker tallied at 1 1/8 miles, and a 9-1 closer earned his diploma in the flat mile finale (rail at 12 feet). 

Juan Hernandez guided home three winners (2 turf). Steve Knapp saddled two claiming dirt sprint winners. 

Del Mar Stakes Recaps for 8-25-24 

Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (6.5f): The final outcome was never in doubt. Overwhelming favorite Sharp Azteca ($2.20) got clear early and was coasting on the lead throughout. She romped by 7 lengths in an easy prep for the BC Filly & Mare Sprint. Flavien Prat rode the winner for Michael McCarthy. Chismosa nipped Anywho for the place by a nose, and Irish Wahine, Tom’s Regret, and Vitalera (CHI) also ran. The final time was 1:15.60.  

August 25 Claims: Race 2 – Yes He Can ($8k, George Lopez). Race 4 – Don’t Tell Tammo ($32k, Paul Aguirre), Gracie’s Big Day ($32k, Ron Ellis). Race 6 – Ur in Trouble ($25k, Ryan Hanson), We’ll Do It Live ($25k, Sean Williams). Race 7 – Handy Dandy ($32k, Manuel Ortiz Sr.), Spirit Maker ($32k, Victor Garcia).
