Del Mar Stakes Recap for Thursday (11-26-20)
Red Carpet Stakes (G3) – Winner: Orglandes ($4.20)
48-1 outsider Aunt Lubie opened up a large early lead but it would not last. Going To Vegas chased from 2nd throughout and grabbed a short advantage in the stretch, but post time favorite Orglandes was patiently handled under Irad Ortiz Jr., and she surged late to score by a 1/2 length. Going To Vegas held 2nd by a length over Quick and Colonial Creed was another neck back in 4th. Blame Debbie stalked and weakened to 5th and was followed by early leader Aunt Lubie, a troubled California Kook, Never Be Enough, Hollywood Girl, and Woodfin.

Hollywood Turf Cup (G2)
Arklow was the classiest of the shippers and the Brad Cox runner got the jump on Lacario and held on by a 1/2 length. The latter was gaining late but could not quite get there in this graded turf marathon. Say the Word closed well for 3rd.

Del Mar Stakes Recaps (11-28-20)
Jimmy Durante Stakes (G3)
Chad Brown trainee Orglandes won the Thanksgiving Day turf feature, and his juvenile filly invader Fluffy Socks was patiently handled by Irad Ortiz Jr., and she closed boldly and scored by a half-length over late runners Javanica and Quattroelle. Pizzazz made a premature run from 7th to 1st and ran out of gas in a 4th place finish.
Seabiscuit Handicap (G2)
This graded turf route featured a contested pace and patient runners dominated. Count Again went from 12th to first in a race that set up perfectly for him. Flavius rallied to the lead but Count Again had too much late momentum and he held 2nd over fellow closer Next Shares. Anothertwistsfate might have run the best race of all. He was on the early lead and was in chased mode after Blitzkreig pushed clear, and he fought hard all the way to the end in a 2-1/2 length defeat as the favorite. This was his first turf attempt for his new trainer Peter Miller and I would not hesitate to play him back vs. this kind in the near future.
Hollywood Derby (G1)
Another late running victory for Chad Brown and Irad Ortiz Jr. Domestic Spending was my best bet and he ran a fine race from off the pace. Smooth Like Strait was the best local hope and he got the jump on the closers, but the the winner’s late kick was a bit too much to overcome and he missed by a head. Gufo was a solid 3rd from the tough outside post. He closed gallantly under Flavien Prat and came up a head and a neck short.

Del Mar Closing Day Stakes Recaps (11-29-20)
Cecil B. DeMille (G3)
Beer Can Man pulled off the 19-1 upset in this one mile turf affair for 2yo’s. He stalked the pace and ran down pacesetter Commander Khai. The latter had a 2-length lead in the lane but weakened late and just held 3rd. Caisson was the only closer making up any ground. He rallied wide from an outer post and missed by a 1/2 length in a fine runner-up finish for Prat/Mandella.
Matriarch (G1)
Chad Brown had this one surrounded. Blowout was his early runner and Viadera was the big late threat, and they did not disappoint. Juliet Foxtrot was aggressively ridden by Mike Smith and she gave a gallant performance in a solid show finish, but this one belonged to the aforementioned Brown trainees. Blowout was in front early, let Juliet Foxtrot go on with it, reengaged that one and had the lead in the lane, but Viadera was finishing fast and got her nose down on the line. Blowout did all of the pace dirt work and settled for 2nd again. She has been unlucky multiple times this year.
