Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-8-22

The lone stakes on Saturday was the Santa Ynez (G2) for sophomore fillies, and Under the Stars ($3.80) was ultra-game as the chalk for Prat/Baffert. She battled on the pace from the rail and put away Miss Mattie B. Under the Stars got a fresh challenge from Awake At Midnyte in the lane, and she smartly turned that one away to score by a bit less than a length. Awake Ay Midnyte was clearly second best and Miss Mattie B was best of the rest in 3rd. Big Switch and Big Shamrock were next, and Mimajoon eased. The final time for 7f was 1:22.51.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $260,262, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $2,350.08. The jackpot carryover stands at $341,709.

Fast main track and firm turf course. One front running winner at six furlongs on dirt. On the turf course, a front runner took the flat mile opener, a stalker scored at 6f, an outside pressed won at 6f, Zero Tolerance stalked from 2nd and captured the Las Cienegas (G2) at 6.5f down the hill, and a last-to-first closer nabbed the finale at one mile (rail at 10 feet).

Four more wins for red hot pilot Flavien Prat. Trainer Phil D’Amato saddled a pair of MSW turf winners and Prat rode both.

Santa Anita Stakes Recaps for 1-9-22

The Sunday feature was the Las Cienegas (G2) for downhill turf sprinters, and it was a very close call at the end. Hear my Prayer and Zero Tolerance ($6.00) showed the way for much of the journey. The latter bid outside and just held off Tapwater’s late surge to score by a diminishing head. Hear my Prayer held 3rd and the beaten favorite and was followed by Ginja, Quiet Secretary, Constantia, and Gold for Kitten. The winning time was 1:13.26.

The 20 cent Rainbow 6 pool was $219,349, and multiple tickets with six winners paid $5,325.76. The jackpot carryover stands at $391,924.

Jan. 9 Claims: Race 2 – Charge Cash ($25k, Sergio Morfin), Defense Wins ($22.5k, Robert Lucas), Smileforme ($20k, Lorenzo Ruiz). Race 4 – Next Revolt ($10k, Mark Glatt), Sayin Grace ($10k, Jonathan Wong).
